Colophon

A Brief History of Sea Slugs! Anime Blog:

Osaka

  • This blog started sometime in January 2004 as a collaboration between three friends: Ender, Kabitzin, and Kungfucius. We’d all watched some anime together while at Cornell, but this was our first opportunity to weigh in on important issues like wood flutes and bad production values.
  • Originally, the blog was built on Blogger, with images being hosted on each of our individual web spaces. As traffic grew, thanks especially to links from Jeff, Momotato, and Maya, it quickly became clear that we would need a dedicated webspace for the project. And so, the site was moved on May 21, 2004 and rebuilt with Wordpress.
  • Finally, for those of you who must know, the blog’s name stems from Azumanga Daioh episode 3, when the girls are dividing into basketball teams and Ayumu Kasuga, aka Osaka (春日歩「大阪」), declares that their team will be the Sea Slug Team. Sadly, seaslug.com was already taken, but the eventual domain name was actually closer to the origin of the title.

Guide to Kabitzin’s Ratings

The ratings are given on a 5 point scale, with only half point intervals. This keeps the amount of waffling down. To date there have been no shows watched that would warrant a 0/5, since it is unlikely that any reviewer here would finish a show that bad. All shows that are reviewed have been watched from start to finish, so there are no premature judgements.

  • 5/5: The show is excellent overall. 5/5 does not mean a show is perfect, but rather that the show is one you would recommend to a friend without a second thought. Usually a show with this score will entertain from start to finish.
  • 4/5: The show is very good. Typically this show will have some flaw that has to be accepted (e.g. bad production values, or a really bad ending), but is otherwise strong. Shows that start really poorly, but improve greatly towards the end often end up here.
  • 3/5: The show is average or extremely uneven. Fans of the genre or certain characters might like this show, but it can also leave some viewers feeling empty. The good will balance out the bad, but the show is not really a “must-see.”
  • 2/5: The show is below average. While there may be some redeeming factors (e.g. great music, or one great character), this show is highly forgettable.
  • 1/5: This show sucks. You would only mention this show to someone with a disclaimer that the show was bad. While sometimes a show can be so bad it’s good, this show is a testiment to the reviewer’s perseverance.
