The bake-off between Suwabara and Monica continues as both contestants finish up their respective creations. Not to be outdone by Monica who has gotten the initial attention of Pierrot with her rose planted in rye bread, Suwabara finally pulls his bread out of the oven for everyone to see, but it looks like a burnt crown! But of course, this isn’t the final form of the bread as Suwabara draws out his katana and slices away the burnt interior to reveal a radiant yellow crown cake studded with color jewel-like fruit! On top of all that, Suwabara paints a faint shadow of chocolate around all of the fruit to give the fruit some depth on top of the radiant crown cake, which he names Pan di Oro Kai.

Impressed with the presentation from both Suwabara and Monica, Pierrot now goes to the all important taste test by tasting Suwabara’s bread first after Monica insist that she have her bread sampled second. Upon biting into Suwabara’s bread, a giant box appears in the middle of the room with Pierrot shut up inside. Kawachi immediately points out that this must be a play on Pan di Oro name referring to Pandora’s box as the box has a “Do Not Open” sign posted on top of it. But impatient to wait for Pierrot to analyze his bread, Suwabara calls out Monica to open the box, and upon opening the box, a massive group of cabbages (apparently cabbage is a word play on misery, which was contained in Pandora’s box) jumps out of the box and starts harassing the audience members. Ryou yells out to Suwabara to see if he can find some hope in the bottom of Pandora’s box, and Suwabara runs over to find a giant burdock root. After pondering for a couple of seconds, Suwabara figures out that the burdock root was a word play on “hope”, and Pierrot then reveals himself out of the burdock root costume and gathers up all the cabbages back into the box. After all the madness had cleared, Pierrot gave Suwabara high marks for his bread and especially praised him for using a special honey to make the fruits shine and keep their flavor. However, Suwabara maintains that he hadn’t used any sort of special honey, but he had mixed some crushed fruit with regular honey and then stored fruit using the fruit/honey mixture.

Next, Pierrot turns to judge Monica’s bread, but during all that time spent on Pierrot’s reaction, the rose had time to “bloom”, giving the flower and bread a sense of life. And after Pierrot took a bite into the bread, Pierrot’s eyes became a waterfall of tears as he proclaimed that this was the first time he had eaten such a wonderful bread. Following that, Pierrot called the Monaco police to lock him up for agitating the Chinese cabbage he used for this reaction, and the Monaco police were quick on the scene to arrest Pierrot and bring him to jail. Later, we find out that this reaction was a play on the 5-layers of Monica’s bread and convoy, and when Monica and Suwabara go to visit Pierrot for the final result, Pierrot declares that Monica has won the bake-off with her 5-layered rye bread, which has the appearance of layered soil and contains some magical ratio of rye to wheat flour in each layer to give the bread the ultimate taste. So the American/St. Pierre team takes round 1 of 3, but as you can see from the last screenshot, Suwabara might have found his soul mate.

With Team Japan’s upset of the French team, it looks as if it’s smooth sail for Kazuma and the gang to win the Monaco Cup. But during the group’s little celebration after their victory, Ryou had to lay down the bad news that the American team may be more formidable than they seemed since Shachihoko’s bread had placed 3rd in the competition, meaning the other 2 American members had comparable or even better baking skills. To make matters even more interesting, Mikhail Scupper, the winner of the F1 race at Monaco, declared in an interview that the Go pan created by Shadow from Team America was better than Kama’s Japan #51. But fortunately, Kazuma didn’t take the defeat too hard as he declared that it’ll only drive him to work even harder after he saw Shadow knead bread like a seasoned baker.

Meanwhile, the final round of competition was announced where there will be three themes: Clothing, Food, and Shelter. Each person on a team will take one theme and battle it out with another person from the opposite team, and the winning team will have to win two of the three themes to win outright. Suwabara decides to take the clothing theme, which is to bake a bread that is both appealing to the eye as well as the taste buds. Kawachi takes the food theme, which is to come up with a delicious dinner bread that can go with everyday food. Kazuma takes the shelter theme, which is most appropriate for him since the task is to develop a bread that represents your homeland. Later, we find that from Team America, Monica Adenauer will be taking the clothing theme, Shack will take the food theme, and Shadow will take the shelter theme. At first, Suwabara is disappointed since he figured that Monica was probably the weakest of the three American team members, but Ryou (with a surprise call from Kidd :P) discovered that Monica was a world pastry champion. Upon hearing this, Suwabara gets himself fired up since he knows that his opponent is formidable.

The day of the clothing theme comes around, and Kai is caught off guard when Monica walks in wearing a bikini, but as you can see from the screencaps, he quickly evens things :P Guess we’ll see if Suwabara’s seemingly archaic way of handling things will help him through this round.

Although I don’t know much about Michael Schumacher in real life, the Japanese writers seemed to out of their way quite a bunch to poke fun at him in this episode. Maybe Schumacher’s Ferrari team has been keeping the Honda team from dominating the F1 circuit :P

We finally get to the showdown with Pierrot judging the various breads, and Kazuma barely makes it in time for the judging with his mysterious black bread. Pierrot at first said that Kazuma had disqualified his bread since he didn’t bake the bread under his observation. Luckily, the King of Monaco interveins and tells how he was responsible for Kazuma coming late to the competition, but fortunately, in the limo which he and Kazuma came in, there was a built in kitchen, so Kazuma was able to bake his bread. Thus, the King asked Pierrot that Kazuma let his bread enter since it wasn’t Kazuma’s fault for arriving late. Pierrot asked Kayser Gran if that was acceptable, and Gran agreed to let Kazuma submit his bread since he was also curious of what it contained.

The rest of the episode pretty much was a smorgasborg of ingredient descriptions from each bread and how they would benefit the driver, and Pierrot continuously used Kawachi as a prop for all of Pierrot’s reactions and gags. Although Kayzer’s bread had some good ingrediants beneficial for the body, Kazuma’s bread won out at the end due to the fact that it had the best ingrediant/flavor combination.

The sports bread bake off date is quickly approaching, and Team Japan is hard at work preparing for their upcoming match-up against France. Unfortunately, Kazuma has trouble drawing inspiration to improve upon Japan #51 since he feels that it’s almost perfect. Kawachi tells Kazuma not to sweat it too much since he has seen enough Japan’s in a lifetime to know how good they are :P But Suwabara jumps in and tells Kazuma to imagine himself in the customer’s shoes to try and improve upon Japan #51. The next morning, Kazuma gets some inspiration and runs off to the Monoco Castle to get some ingredients. However, this leaves Kawachi and Suwabara in a bind since the competition also starts that same day, and the two (along with Kuro-yan and Sophie) get a dose of intimidation from the Kayser brothers when they see Gran’s 2 meter and 72 cm baking arms, which are armed with uber solar gauntlets and flexi-fingers! :P

Despite the intimidation, Kawachi and Suwabara realize they have a competition to win (or at least try to win), so they make their way to the baking arena and get to work. Pierrot provides some entertaining commentary in describing all the contestant’s ingredients and how the ingredients make for a good sports bread.

Corn Barnacles from Kawachi

Turtle’s blood and Red Wine from Suwabara

Pearl Powder and Blueberries from Gran

However, Pierrot’s commentary seems to put some additional pressure on team Japan since it seems that Gran will have the edge at the end in terms of the “right” ingredients, and Gran makes a comment saying that Suwabara’s Lupan #6 has a fatal flaw. Guess we’ll see next episode who comes out on top!

Although Pierrot gets annoying at times, I just had to laugh when he kept interrupting Kuro-yan in the middle of explaining what ingredients each baker was using

Upon getting out of the underground cave, Kazuma and the others are met by Leon Hart the XIV, the 14th King of Monaco (yeah, gotta love the name :P), who gives a public apology to them for all the trouble that has happened to them. In addition, with Pierrot picking the semi-finalist to be France, USA, China, and Japan, the King announces the next baking challenge: bake a sports bread worthy enough for F1 Grand Prix racers.

With the new topic in mind, team Japan begins their preparation by gathering some ingredients at the King’s Monaco castle, but the King has the group answer an interesting question of who a baker should feed their bread to upon baking a delicious bread. Kazuma of course comes up with the answer, which is “yourself”, as a baker needs to taste-test their bread before giving it out to the public. However, when the group returns back to home base and tells their story to Ryuu and Sophie, Sophie immediately gets suspicious that her father Kirisaki Yuuichi is working on something devious behind the scenes to sabotage the Japanese team. The Pyramid investigator fills in some more of the history behind Yuuichi and the King by pointing out how the King was an artisan under Yuuichi at one point in time. So the road to winning the Monaco Cup continues to be hazardous for team Japan.

For whatever reason, this episode seemed to pull out a lot more gags than previous episodes, but each gag was executed pretty well I especially got a kick out of the scene between Kawachi, Suwabara, and the Monaco Castle guard who tries to take Suwabara’s sword away
