Ender’s July 2007 List

While none of the new series in the new season are especially appealing yet, last season’s offerings are still going strong, and some series from the season before that had strong endings. Kabitzin predicted Baccano! would be my “killer app” for the new season; I’ll definitely have to check it out due to his rather [...]

Grim Grimoire: Kabitzin, This One’s For You

Gather ’round kiddos, as it’s time for a flashback scene into Kabitzin’s mysterious past. Once upon a time, our mutual friend Velius and I invited Kabitzin to join us in a round of Warlords Battlecry II, an excellent real-time strategy game which we had been enjoying. Kabitzin warned us that this would be [...]

Ateliers in the Closet

After playing Atelier Iris 3, I started looking into the origins of the Atelier series, since most of the games were never ported over to the west. The gameplay philosophy in the Iris trilogy has shifted away from the the earlier series (Atelier Marie/Elie/Lilie/etc. and their sequels/spinoffs/sidestories), which are more like hybrid RPG/life simulation [...]

Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm

Inspired by Jeff’s recent acquisition of a PS2 and positive first impression of Atelier Iris 3, I decided to give it a whirl as well, since Grim Grimoire isn’t readily available yet.
Though reviews are extremely mixed, I have to say that I am actually enjoying AI3 quite a bit. Being rather sick [...]

Phantom of Inferno: DVD-Play review

Phantom of Inferno is a non-H visual novel (choose your own adventure) released in the US by Hirameki Intl. The American release is a DVD-game, in that it can be popped into a DVD player and you select choices at junctures with the DVD remote. I think the original version was a PC [...]

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (X360/PS3)

The Gundam franchise has officially reached new lows! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry that Gundam, which has yet to find a consistently good game formula, has been crossed with the Dynasty Warriors franchise, which has perhaps the most tired formula EVER. Who knows, maybe it will be decently entertaining. [...]

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 12

Nice mixer of fanservice and action. The first half contains beach-episode goodness featuring Yoko’s jealousy of Nia, and the second half is pure aquatic pyrotechnics. A few points:
1. Like the Spiral King, it’s apparent that Nia is no ordinary human. Is she just 1337, or has she had some genetic modifications [...]

Odin Sphere DONE! Final Thoughts

Done! And we got to hear Alice speak! I was half expecting Socrates the cat to start talking too.
Odin sphere has a neat endgame structure - once you finish the five character campaigns, a sixth “Armageddon” book is unlocked, which chronicles the end of the world that the previous books were leading up [...]

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 11

Three words: SIMON IS BACK! Thank goodness, as all his moping was really dragging the show down. Hopefully Nia won’t kick the bucket in the forthcoming episodes now that she’s done her duty. I’m beginning to warm up to her finally.
I must admit, Guame is quite crafty for a beastman - [...]

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 9-10

Intro sequence has been updated and adds a couple new scenes.
Simon is deeply depressed and fights recklessly, trying to be like Kamina, but ends up being more of an asshole. During one fight, the Lagann sputters and ceases functioning due to the imbalance in Simon’s heart, and lands in a junkheap. Simon [...]
