Kimi ni Todoke 18

You might be laughing now, but we'll see how you feel when I wrap my long legs around your brother

Summary:

Damn that Vince with the Slap Chop

Sawako can’t get over how cute Ryu and Chizuru are together, but in an ironic twist Chizuru thinks of Ryu as a little brother while her real crush (Ryu’s older brother Tohru) thinks of Chizuru as a younger sister.  This sets up an awkward mess where Chizuru spends all her money buying a mitt sack for Ryu and then lamenting that she can’t afford a ruffly mini-skirt to try and seduce Tohru.  Ryu figures it’s time to spill the beans, and stops by Chizuru’s room to confess.  Unfortunately, before he can even start the confession, Chizuru realizes Ryu’s present is sitting out in the open and so kicks him out before he ruins the surprise.  A confused Ryu gets screwed over again and is forced to jog home in the rain.

In other sad love news, Ayane gets tired of her stage 5 clinger boyfriend and stops by to tell him how she feels.  Never one to accept being dumped, the guy slaps Ayane hard across the face and then sobs in her arms, begging to be taken back.  Ayane then realizes that her ex was just fronting, and his real self is pretty pathetic.  Sawako is sad she wasn’t there to support Ayane, and Chizuru offers to have a small sleepover party to cheer Ayane up.

Reaction:

I told my brother you have herpes

Chizuru must be one hell of a worker that Sanada-otousan has both his boys working to bring her into the family.  Still, this episode reinforced one simple rule: college guys who date high school girls are losers (or perhaps perverts).  Even if you’re doing it just to get laid, it means you can’t prey on easy freshman college girls.  Watching Ayane’s ex-boyfriend sobbing over her and yet slapping her in the face confirmed all my suspicions about what kind of guy he was.  Needy and lame and not pillow-like at all.

This brings me to my next point: Ryu almost made a major mistake trying to take advice from love-n00b Shota.  If Ryu confesses to Chizuru now, it will ruin Chizuru’s whole month and mess everything up, triggering a shoot-the-messenger situation.  However, since Tohru is almost certain to not reciprocate Chizuru’s feelings, Ryu should make sure Chizuru sees Tohru is out of her league (preferably by setting Tohru up with some smoking hot short chick) and then box out for the rebound.  Ryu and Chizuru are already close, and there’s nothing like some vulnerability to make the sparks fly.  I call that love-love activation energy.

About Kabitzin:
One of the founders of Sea Slugs, I handle most of the blog admin tasks while wearing my I AM BOSS shirt. I like my action series well-choreographed, and my romance series extra trashy. I also have a soft spot for puns.

How have I not heard boxing out used in terms of dating before now?? That’s fantastic.

I’m almost certain that Ryu’s brother is going to bring home a fiance for New Years, which is why Ryu wants to tell Chizuru to step off and make Ryu her man. Ryu should become the Charles Barkley of this series soon enough.

I’m hoping Tohru is a homosexual.

That would be hilarious. And given Chizuru’s general inability to read people properly, it would seem highly probable.

Ryu didn’t go to Chizuru to confess, he was going to tell her that his brother will come home next week

Will Tohru just be a palette swap of Ryu or will he look like Ken?!

I liked this episode better than the last because I think I’ve moved firmly into the “hurry up and confess already, Shota!” camp, and his actions after the near miss were a bit frustrating for me. So this time around it was nice that the focus was shifted elsewhere. I think that Chizuru is going to be in a world of hurt next episode, but maybe that will help her realize how awesome Ryu is. Even if he did tell her brother that she had herpes, he did it out of love.

The one thing I didn’t enjoy this time was Ayane getting smacked. Doesn’t that fool know that her VA is a harbinger of death in another currently running series!? Better watch his step….

Interesting that you should mention that. When Shota stated that he would definitely confess if he was Ryu, I scoffed and thought to myself, “No way you would confess, Shota; you would just pussy out like you have did the last few episodes.”

Doesn’t herpes usually come out of love, even fake herpes?

LOL, I guess you’re right about that. Some kind of “love” anyway. I also died a little inside when Shota stepped forward to offer advice…. Oh well, we have at least one more week where something actually happens (aside: I’d probably be less bitter if they hadn’t thrown the re-cap in there. The extra slowness didn’t help) to look forward to.

From what a couple of manga fans have told me, the actual manga itself moves slower than the anime. That’s just insane.

yeah I didn’t like the ayane thing either but that was down to the general class reaction to it. fair enough she didn’t go to pieces over it as is about right for her character but while everyone was shocked that she came in with a bruise, they didn’t come across too bothered about the reason behind it, almost like it was just an unfortunate consequence of the breakup. nobody seemed particularly pissed at the boyfriend at all.

I think it’s because they respect her privacy. Everyone realized that there wasn’t much they could do and Ayane pretty much took care of it herself. While it’s great to have friends who can support you at these times, it’s best (in most cases) to leave the person alone. What’s done is done; Ayane is over that guy.

Part of me liked the slap scene, but then I remember those delicious upper-lips and then I think NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I would kiss her boo-boo good-bye! 。(◕‿‿◕)。

Also, you watch 30 Rock?!?! :)

Well the slap did catch me off guard, but I didn’t expect that guy to hit her so hard that it’d leave a bruise like that. And with Chizuru I can see this going wrong in so many ways.

I figure Ayane was ok with it because afterwards she kneed the bum so hard he coughed out his testicles.

I’m with the consensus here, Tohru is coming home with some extra baggage, but for a time I thought maybe he had been in a bad accident and Ryu didn’t want to break it to Chizuru that he can’t walk or something… dunno where I was going with that mindset.

Oh man that would be crazy if Tohru came back and couldn’t get it up or something. How would Ryu break that to Chizuru?
