Darker Than Black Thoughts

Rather than pick up more series this season, I decided to marathon through the first season of Darker Than Black.  I’m not sure why I didn’t watch it when it originally aired, but the ride was intense.  Now I’m all caught up for season 2!  I opted not to do a full review, so read on for some musings about the series as a whole.

The Good

  • It was kinda jarring to see all those Pizza Hut ads all over the place, but I suppose I should be used to it by now.  When Amber showed up, though, I felt a twinge of uncertainty about whether I had accidentally queued up some Code Geass by accident, however.  It’s good to see that Pizza Hut supports all kinds of revolutionary thinking.
  • Man, that stuff about Hei not wanting to kill was BS.  Like he honestly got all those sick fighting skills after Bai became a Contractor?  No Wei.  Hei had some really sick fighting skills, and I’m convinced that he was just sad that his assassination hobby got turned into a 40-hour a week job.  I loved the fights, and I wished that Hei had gotten a better nickname like “Starcrusher” or something.
Come back to my place and we'll see if I can hit a home run

  • I liked the inclusion of Misaki.  Misaki’s competence was great and her appeal was enhanced even further by the flashback showing that she looked (and did kendo) exactly like Satori from Bamboo Blade in high school.
  • Teleportation should never include clothing.

The Bad

This is why you have to make backups, Sidekick

  • MAAAAAAAAAAOOOO!!!  I laughed when he possessed that crow, taunted the other Contractor, and then slammed head first into some concrete, but I really think that was a missed advertising opportunity.  He should have slammed into a super clean pane of glass that had been polished to a streak-free shine.  Anyway, I’ll really miss Mao, and I hope he shows up again.
  • Those Observer Apparitions creep me out.  Yin could totally be watching you poop or something.  I’m not sure that being able to show up as your Observer Apparition is that useful either, considering that being spotted by Contractors ruins your reconnaissance.
  • I can see how those who watched this show when it first came out could be mad about the ending.  It was pretty confusing.  However, I was cool with the unanswered questions since I know that there is a sequel.
  • Bai’s remuneration sucks!  It’s like she’s narcoleptic.
  • I never understood the point of those stone-flower bees.

The Ugly

You must remember, this is the internets. Some people would probably PREFER Yin to watch them poop.

+Props for inclusion of Pocari Sweat

I’m waiting for the Yunyun of dolls, i.e. the doll whose medium is really uncommon or whose medium is only present in awkward places.

/observer apparition appears in roll of toilet paper

Maybe I’m just so used to seeing advertising and such.. but I honestly did not even notice Pizza Hut ads. Thinking back, I’m not sure I could even tell you where one was, and I just marathoned this myself about a month or two ago. I guess I just kinda ignore stuff like that >_>

Misaki is awesome indeed. And you know, I thought the same thing about the observation spirits too. They’re kinda risky, but I guess that’s the downside to the doll’s powers. If they couldn’t be seen, they’d pretty much be clairvoyant with no drawbacks.

Now catch up with the rest of us with DTB S2~

Wow, really? I think every single city mood scene had a Pizza Hut sign on it.

I think all of the ads were scrapped for the US release, much like they were removed from the US DVD/broadcast versions of Code Geass (no free advertising for you, Pizza Hut!), so if you watched the Funimation DVDs (I shoulda waited for Blu-ray) or a domestic DVD rip then you wouldn’t get any advertisements. In the case of DTB you don’t lose a whole lot by their removal, but I think that some of the charm was lost in Code Geass when they were scrubbed – there are a whole lot of people out there that don’t know that the rebellion was financed by Pizza Hut, and that’s just sad.

Those poor fools probably think that E.P.R. stands for Evening Primrose rather than Excellent Pizza Rolls… :(

Good to see the Darker than Black love spread, especially anyone who appreciates Misaki. When I first watched it through the ending didn’t really cause me any consternation and it wasn’t until I started picking through it that I realised how many threads were left unanswered.

The second season has definitely kicked off well, but with only 12 episodes to tell the new story (and 4 OVA episodes for the period between the two series) I’m still worried that all the questions will be left without any conclusions.

Also, hot meganekko over the legal drinking age is hot.

And I really enjoyed the side stories with the detective, that whole ear cleaning thing with the stinky busty gal was hilarious. Disturbing. But hilarious.

The detective himself kinda annoyed me, but he was a useful plot device and his adventures revealed a lot of nice information about the characters and the setting.
