Summary:

After the big fight from last episode, Ed and Al’s hunch was correct, as they are spared by Father and the Homunculus, as the brothers discover that Father’s lair is actually in the basement of the Central Military Headquarters.

Envy continues to call him Chibi

Envy continues to call him Chibi

After showering and some awesome hair-fixing “alchemy“, Ed reveals to Al that he has found his missing body. Envy then leads the brothers to see Wrath, where Ed and Al realize that Wrath is actually King Bradley. Mustang quickly explains why he’s there, and Bradley blackmails Ed into staying in the army by threatening to kill Winry.

Piercing a box with someone in it using a saber. There are many ways to do it, but it's determined beforehand where they'll pierce. It's been planned out so that they miss if the person inside contorts their body correctly.

Ed realizes that he cannot win, and accepts Bradley’s threat. As they get up to leave, Bradley suddenly thrusts at Al with his sword, perhaps sensing that someone was hiding inside his armour. Fortunately for May Chang, she was hiding in the legs and escapes alive. Now released, Ed and Al call Winry to confirm she’s fine. With her MASSIVE CHILDBEARING HIPS and her MAN HANDS, Winry is pleasantly surprised at how much Ed cares about her.

As they leave the phone booth, Greed/Ling greets the brothers and gives them a message from Ling. They then return to where Ran Fan is staying to drop off the injured May Chang and Ling’s message to Ran Fan: Ling has obtained a Philosopher’s Stone. Ran Fan’s joy is quickly shattered as Al explains the horrible truth about Greed taking over his body.

Meanwhile Mustang explains to Armstrong the truth about Bradley and urges him to quit the army but he refuses. It seems that Armstrong had previously refrained from slaughtering the Ishbal-jins because he knew it was wrong, and sensing this as an opportunity to right things from the inside, Armstrong vows to stay on in the army.

Back at the house, May Chan encounters Ran Fan, and reveals herself to be a princess of Xing and starts to fight Ran Fan who as the bodyguard of Ling is part of a rival clan. Their fight is cut short by the doctor though, and they are urged to rest.

Meanwhile, Ed tries to see if he can use his powers again by helping a lady fix her balcony. After fixing it, passing soldiers note that some other alchemists were by that morning and were unable to do anything at all. Ed then suddenly realizes that when Father disrupted his and Al’s alchemy that everyone was affected aside from Scar and May Chan. Indeed Ed finally realized what the entire blogsphere realized last week – that there’s something wrong with the alchemy in his country, and that the only way to defeat the Homunculus and Father is to figure out another way of doing alchemy. Finally we go back to the wandering Scar. After realizing that he got ripped off and that no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t find Spinter or the Ninja Turtles, Scar runs into Dr. Marcoh who spills the beans about his entire involvement with the Ishbal affair.

The episode ends with a new Gluttony born from Father.

Well at least there's no Midichlorians...

Reaction:

After a ridiculously amazing fighting episode, it’s only natural that we go back to a plot episode. This effectively ends the the ‘finding out the big secret’ arc of the story. Now that everyone’s intentions are laid bare, we are of course witness to the spectacle that will likely be the downfall of Father, mainly his supreme arrogance that letting Mustang, Ed and Al go free won’t matter at all.

It will be interesting to see how everyone is going to fight now that they know the truth. With his men (and woman) scattered around the country, it seems like Armstrong will be the go-to guy for Mustang now. His movements will of course be quite limited, so I wonder if he will play along with Ed and Al’s quest to find out the meaning behind Scar’s alchemy or if he will have his own plans.

Now that we know the Homunculus are easily reborn, will we see a new Lust? It would be totally awesome to get Kikuko Inoue back, so I really hope so.

Finally… what the hell have they done with Winry? Yes I acknowledge that her assets have been restored, but now she has crazy hips and man hands. I mean really, how far will they go in screwing up her totally awesome first season character design?

Next week we will be treated finally to the other side of the Ishbal story courtesy of Dr. Marcoh. Perhaps we’ll also see some scenes of the actual production of the Philospher’s Stone as well.

P.S. YES YES YES Ran Fan!!! She got a lot of screentime this episode and I’m one happy camper. Here’s hoping for more Ran Fan in the upcoming episodes :) :) :)

P.P.S. Good to see Armstrong too!

It scares me to know that Father could take a dump and a Homunculus could crawl out. Also, when Al was putting Ran Fan back to bed, there was for sure a chest brush. Just saying…

I loved Ed’s horrible goth-decor in fixing that balcony.

As soon as Father meets someone really skanky, maybe Lust will return. Like some really skanky Xingese princess that we haven’t met yet, perhaps.

LOL yes I guess we do need a really big skank to fill Lust’s role.

I too loved Ed’s awesome sense of decor.

And finally… why couldn’t I be Al? WHY WHY

No Father can not recreate Lust. The homunculi are a one time only thing created by Father getting rid of his sins. When Lust died he couldn’t create a new one. Keep in mind that Gluttony and Greed have never died. This Greed is the same Greed except without his memories.

Yeah, Lust can’t be recreated as before because her Philosopher’s Stone was completely destroyed by Mustang, while Father reabsorbed Greed and Gluttony’s stones.

While others may disagree with me, I’ve personally found this series to be much better than the original. The original deviates from the manga about half way through and goes off on it’s own. This one is closer to the manga. While being closer to the manga doesn’t always mean ‘better’, it does in the case of FMA Brotherhood.

Yeah, even though this is a slower, more plot-intensive episode, I think it is almost as gripping as the more action-oriented episodes — and bear in mind I’m saying this as someone who knows what is going to happen, haha.

I wish we could get Kikuko Inoue back. Miss her so much. :(
