Kimi ni Todoke 03

She's so happy!!! She's so happy!!!

She's so happy!!! She's so happy!!!

Summary:

Still overjoyed at her happiness from the day before, Sawako starts off the day by having her face scrunched up so that she won’t cry, but ends up giving the icy cold stare of death. As everyone arrives for school, Ryu introduces himself properly for the first time.

Sawako's actually a Newtype!

Sawako's actually a Newtype!

As Kazehaya and Sawako discuss a possible name for Kazehaya’s new dog, the new substitute teacher (Dragonball hair and all) interrupts with a name: Pedro Martinez, which Sawako ends up liking as Maru-chan. The teacher then proceeds to stare directly into Sawako’s eyes for over 3 seconds proving the CURSE OF DEATH to be false. Kazehaya decides to follow up by doing the same, making Sawako blush to no end.

Later that day, Yoshida explains that Ryu and her were friends back in middle school and that Kazehaya went to the same school. Apparently all the girls at the school were obsessed with Kazehaya, and all decided that he was to belong to all the girls as a group. Meanwhile Yano explains she ended up being friends with Yoshida because they ended up sitting beside each other since the first day of high school.

As the day ends, the new teacher asks for someone’s help in creating the attendance log book (don’t they have computers in Japan?), and naturally no one volunteers but Sawako. Yet again Kazehaya volunteers to help. Together they work on the book but Kazehaya is only able to write down Sawako’s name before being called out of the room. As he leaves, two other girls (the ones who were scared of her last episode, Hirano and Endo) walk into the room offering to help out and chat. It’s there that Sawako mentions how she used to be in White Album be called Zashiki Warashi back in middle school and liked that name.

After the log is complete, Sawako runs into Kazehaya again and again thanks him for his support, but he remarks that it’s because of her hard work that everyone is finally recognizing her for whom she really is.

Enter: The RIVAL GIRL

Enter: The RIVAL GIRL

The next day Sawako spaces out as she is carrying some papers and ends up dropping them all over. As she bends over to pick everything up, she ends up meeting the RIVAL GIRL without realizing it, and remarks at her beauty in her mind.

That afternoon, Sawako meets up with Kazehaya to walk the dog, and it is there they agree to keep the dog a secret between the two of them. Kazehaya then learns that Sawako really has nothing better to do all day but study, and in her free time she imagines how it would be teach someone and she learns from that.

This was such a nice scene

Everyone gathers around as Sawako declares her love for...

Following up on their conversation, Kazehaya asks Sawako for help the next day at school. After her amazing explanations, everyone joins in and eventually the entire class joins in to learn from her. Sawako ends up having the best day of her life. That afternoon, on the way home, Kazehaya remarks that he was actually a bit jealous that everyone now knows how great Sawako is and that she isn’t his alone.

Meanwhile, as Yoshida and Yano leave school the same day, they overhear some girls calling Yoshida a big slut and Yano a delinquent. When pressed about who started those rumours, the girls respond… Sadako.

That's some upper lip you got there!

Reaction:

Usually I watch my anime on my projector on the wall. As it’s a bit of an older model (only 800 lines resolution) I miss some of the finer details. But today I ended up watching this episode on the computer screen and noticed some of the finer details with the animation, like how everyone’s eyes will flicker and shake just a bit in close ups. It’s little things like these which are minor but which really add to the entire ambiance of the whole show. So Bravo Production I.G., bravo.

As for the episode itself, for a while I was getting a bit worried. The episode was almost TOO positive. Coming off last week, where everything came up Sawako, this week was no different. Even after meeting the rival girl, Sawako did not bat an eye. Even after realizing that all the girls liked Kazehaya, Sawako just loved him more. It seemed almost TOO perfect. I was pretty happy that at the end of the episode there ended up being some conflict. I wonder if this whole rumour thing will only be one episode long and easily cleared up or not. Considering the vast amount of anime conflict that ends up happening because the characters don’t ever communicate the truth to eachother, I hope that this show will play this out a bit differently.

I do appreciate though that Yano and Yoshida still call Sawako by her nickname Sadako even though they don’t actually believe it. It adds a bit to the show for some reason I can’t quite my fingers on.

One thing that I love about this show though, is that there are never ending shots of Sawako being… just totally awesome. And so I’ll end up this week’s post with my new feature:

The Sawako shot of the week

P.S. Ran Fan I still love you!

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with more happy! But I do agree that stories must have conflicts, and looks like we’ll get some next episode!

lol @ indirect pen usage. I didn’t get why taking attendance would be such a pain but then I realized that you would have to remember all the Kanji for the student’s names, which is why it was special that Kazehaya knew how to write Sawako’s name. Thinking about it though, I guess you could crib off the prior day’s attendance log, but Kazehaya still gets points for knowing.

I was a little disappointed that rival girl’s love attack was a rumor campaign, but I’m looking forward to Sawako setting things straight.

You have a good point about Kanji, but still they have Kanji on computers, and surely the school has records… why don’t they just print it up? We used to have printed up attendance logs when I was in ELEMENTARY school like 20 years ago hahah.

Although I’m not sure if Sawako was happy that Kazehaya knew how to write her name vs. him just doing the act of writing the name. I hear the names ’sawako’ and ‘kuronuma’ quite a bit in anime and j-drama and I assume it’s pretty common.

It’ll be interesting to see what Rival-Gurl can bring to the table, but yea, all I have is RAGE towards her! How can she do that to our poor Sawako, and when she just made friends too!

Japanese students would even hang out with the real Sadako if it helped them increase their test scores.
