Sadako... L's girlfriend

Sawako... L's girlfriend

Summary:

With the summer break over school starts anew as Sawako walks to school in the rain. On the way, she encounters an abandoned puppy in a box with a sign that says ‘Adopt me’. As the dog cowers in fear from the scary looking Sawako, she leaves her umbrella to shelter the dog and walks the rest of the way to school in the rain. Arriving drenched, Sawako manages to scare a few people before Kazehaya walks in wet as well and Sawako notes that while her being wet just got people scared, him being wet is still a centre of attention for everyone.

After noticing that Sawako is drenched, Kazehaya offers her his towel, and even gets Yoshida (the brown hair girl who helped organize the test of courage from last week’s episode) to offer Sawako her spare change of gym clothes. Meanwhile, the talk of the school is that Kazehaya rejected Sawako at the beginning of the summer break. As Kazehaya thinks back, it’s implied that there was no rejection at all, but rather perhaps he was too afraid himself to confess his true feelings to her as he was too stunned by how much she worshiped him.

Fully appreciative of everyone helping her wet self out, Sawako secretly leaves the girls and Kazeyaha drinks at lunch. Pleasantly surprised, Kazehaya tracks down Sawako to thank her for the drink. That afternoon with the sun shining, the two walk together to where the stray dog was in the morning. Sawako gets her umbrella back, and while the puppy was clearly scared of her, the puppy instantly warms up to Kazehaya. He decides to adopt the puppy for his own, and also snuggles up close to Sawako as he notes that dogs like the friends of people that they like too. As he departs to go home, Sawako is taken aback at how naturally she’s able to interact with Kazehaya and that the wall between the two of them has gone.

The next day, Sawako decides to bake some cookies as a further thank you to the girls and Kazehaya for the day before. Before she’s able to give out the cookies though, the class is charged with creating a new seating plan. Everyone tries to get seats as far away from the ‘cursed Sadako’ as possible, and eventually she ends up sitting by herself in the back by the window. Her time alone is short lived though, as Kazehaya decides to move in beside her, while Yano (the orange haired girl) and Yoshida move in front of her, and a new character named Ryu ends up with the back corner seat behind Sawako, apparently unperturbed by her scariness. Overjoyed, Sawako offers everyone her cookies which they love and she ends up having one of the best days of her life.

As she walks home that afternoon, Kazehaya jokes that she must be crying from being so happy but she responds by saying that she’d never do such an unsightly thing. As the episode ends, their chat after school is coincidentally witnessed by some of their schoolmates who wonder if Sawako really was rejected, including one love rival looking girl.

Reaction:

I really can’t get over how much I like this show. Sawako is proving to considerably less naive than I thought she was from the first episode, and is in fact quite a fighter in her own way. While she’s fully aware that little children and animals are scared of her and that everyone in the school thinks that she looks like Sadako from The Ring, she’s still able to confront this knowledge head on and with optimism that perhaps she can overcome all of this if she just changed herself. The fact that she isn’t emo or depressed about all of this is pretty amazing and something to be admired.

Meanwhile Kazehaya really is looking more and more like a true love interest. While we never really get to know what exactly happened during the summer (although it’s assumed that nothing happened), it seems like Kazehaya really does have a crush on Sadako. With the two girls Yano and Yoshida fast becoming friends with Sadako, added on with the slacker-appearing Ryu, we’re one person away from the typical J-drama/anime group of 6 friends (3 girls and 3 guys). I wonder if there will be a 6th person, and who that will be.

Finally, the episode ends with a hint that the brown haired girl may be interested in Kazahaya. Can we expect some teenaged bullying of Sadako by her friends, or will her scariness overcome all?

P.S. Sawako’s character design this episode really reminded me of Wang Liu Mei.

P.P.S. I too had an umbrella I used from when I was kid until the end of high school. By the end the poor thing kept on inverting with any minor gust of wind, but hell I loved that umbrella. Didn’t have my name on it though…

I hope there’s no bullying: it would be so cliche for a rival in love to be a total jackass or bitch. Although maybe it would be amusing to see her trying to “save” Kazehaya from the clutches of an evil witch.

You do make a good point/ It would be a bit cliche, and I do hope that I’m pleasantly surprised. A bit too early in the show though to tell whether or not this show has that much originality to it.

In before Jesus159159159 rants on incoherently about how Sawako is his waifu. Sorry, bro, I had my eyes on her first!

Anyway, good episode, and resouding Shounen A’s comments, I really wouldn’t want to see the inclusion of a bitchy rival, though I suppose the show could head on that path…

It would make for more angst if the rival is actually nice, as Sawako would probably go out of her way to support someone whom she thought would be more suitable for Kazehaya.

…perhaps he was too afraid himself to confess his true feelings to her as he was too stunned by how much she worshiped him.

I think it was more that he was put off balance by her emphasis on how much she respected him. While he had been hoping for a mutual attraction between two equals, Sawako’s admiration generated a sense of distance between them. This is compounded by the fact that Sawako said that her feelings would never change, which would make a confession at that time an absolute disaster. Fortunately, it appears that he is willing to put in the work to get her to change her mind.

Hmm you put it in a better way then I did, I agree with you.

As for the rival, I’m hoping for someone who gets really close to her and then the two have to fight over the guy, that would be pretty entertaining.

If there were to be a contest they’d have to specify that Sawako would have to participate with her hair down, because with her hair up she would automatically win. This show has been surprisingly good so far. Though I fear that Sawako’s worst rival is herself, I’m looking forward to seeing what rival girl has in her love arsenal.

    Sawako… L’s girlfriend

You mean MY girlfriend! (and not Shin’s cause I claimed her first.) Anyways, loved the episode! BUT, I didn’t really like Kazehaya’s sort-of shy voice… it literally sounds like he’s about to jizz his pants or something! I don’t know, it just sounds… creepy.

I’d call it chibi but they’re not small and I dunno what else to call it… anyone?

    Lets call em’ butt-heads!

While we never really get to know what exactly happened during the summer (although it’s assumed that nothing happened)

OH, I can tell you ALL ABOUT what ME and SAWAKO did over the summer, and I can also tell you what SHIN DIDN’T DO with her over the summer, Mr Mc-Silly-Jilly-Jelly-Beany-Kimi-ni-Todoke-doki-pants!

LOL Jesus!!! I’d take her first, but I think that as Ranma-ko I just need to pour some cold water on myself and that is that… :p

I liked how everyone made a big deal out of sitting with Sawako, but then Ryu showed their fake kindness because classroom window seats rock! Stop acting like you are doing it for Sawako you fakers!

Also, Shota is crushing on Sawako so hard that I can’t wait for the flashback where he’s always had some kind of crazy Sadako fetish.

Ryu’s claiming of the window seat was pretty funny, but Sawako quickly won him over with her baked goods. I’m glad to see that you’re watching this one despite the Sadako element, but I sincerely hope that we don’t get a flashback of Shota watching Ringu with a box of tissues….
