Kabitzin’s July 2009 List

They tell me I have a lovely Barry tone

They tell me I have a lovely Barry tone

I’ve cleared up a big chunk of my backlog, and it’s been glorious.  I still have to watch the second season of Spice and Wolf, as well as Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, but I have heard good things about both series.  Has Umi Monogatari gotten any better?  The art looked nice, but it sounds like the story might be rubbish.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: New material, yes!  It’s incredible how far this show has gotten, and I love the fast pace.  I like where the plot is going instead of having Dante show up and be some jilted lover.  I also like the addition of Xing for that Asian fusion feel.
  2. Phantom -Requiem for the Phantom-: My anticipation over the Cal-Reiji-Ellen fallout is overwhelming to the point where I think I might be a bad person.  It’d be hilarious if it turned out that Cal’s hamburglar stew was the cause of the apartment explosion, rather than anything that Inferno did.
  3. Shangri-La: Kuniko is really vying with Louise for the pink haired girl I wanted to like, but ended up hating award, but Lord Hiruko and Karin have rescued this series with some unexpected humor.  The story is still quite interesting, although the weeds-from-hell development curbs my enthusiasm a bit.
  4. Bakemonogatari: I always thought that SHAFT was excellent at creepy scary stuff, but Bakemonogatari isn’t really all that scary.  It’s almost too bad.  Still, this show has been a lot better than I expected, and I still love those character designs.  When do we get to the basketball part, though?
  5. Canaan: I think we all need to lower our expectations for the plot, but there is still time for everything to come together.  In the meantime, the action is fantastic and the goofy yuri subtext is hilarious.

Rising:

  • Valkyria Chronicles: Jeez, how many Rosie-centric episodes have we gotten?  Still, there was some real character development this month, and Isara’s fate was very moving.  I don’t like the Alicia-Faldio-Welkin love triangle that much, since I’m pretty sure that Faldio is going to pussy out and let Welkin win (just like in the OP).  If Faldio and Welkin really started hating each other and scheming to win Alicia, that would really get me excited about this show.

Falling:

  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: You still think trolling is funny?  Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?!
About Kabitzin:
One of the founders of Sea Slugs, I handle most of the blog admin tasks while wearing my I AM BOSS shirt. I like my action series well-choreographed, and my romance series extra trashy. I also have a soft spot for puns.

    Spaniard! Spaniard! Spaniard! ;P

Out of 7, I followed Canaan, Bakemonogatari and Valkyria Princess. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is showing on my cable (nice Singapore) and I’m playing Phantom (is this correct?). Talk about similar interests!

Oh man, thanks for the timely reminder of how awesome a movie Gladiator is.

No room on that list for Cross Game? And Valkyria Chronicles is rising? I’d have said it was falling. Just no where near as quickly as Haruhi.

It would take a very impressive anime to get me to watch baseball, so no Cross Game for me. As for VC, I think it’s been much more interesting lately. You didn’t like all the racist-Rosie episodes?

Nice selection of shows ;) … maybe I have to give Shangri-La a whirl after all.

And how can you not love Senjougahara? The self-confessed crazy love-starved cheek-stapling virgin? ;)

You make me want to take a second look at Shangri-La and Canaan :)
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 has been consistently awesome for me, Umi Monogatari… not sure, though I’d say Cross Game would be far worth your time than that =P

Canaan probably has to be watched like an action flick, and Shangri-La is kinda sucky at the start. But, with tempered expectations, anything is possible!

Yeah, FMA: Brotherhood is finally getting to the good parts of the manga. The new few episodes should be quite the battle.

Bakemonogatari is just full of Hitagi win lol.

In case you’re wondering Umi monogatari is getting a bit more interesting by ep 6, but still I wouldn’t call it riveting entertainment.

      ALL GLORY TO SENJOUGAHARA-SAMA!

UM seems fairly interesting for a not-terribly-inspired magical girl show. I think it’s the reasonably creative twists it puts on the standard formula. And Kanon’s Aura of Evil natch.

Doesn’t Needless get any love anywhere, though ? Thus far I’ve found it gut-bustingly hilarious, plus it has the best Hokuto Shinken parody since Excel Saga

Karin is awesome, hands down the best character on Shangri-La. Shangri-La has been surprising me with how ‘good’ of a show it is. I mean it’s still not a good show by most measures, but I really can’t stop watching it for some reason.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was my most anticipated show of the season as I really like disaster movies in general. While the disaster parts have so far been done really well, I really dislike the main character (the girl) immensely. She’s just ridiculously annoying and draining to watch. I’m hoping the disaster parts get more and more crazy as the show goes on though to make up for it, but I dunno if it will. The fact that little kids are the main characters makes this seem to be more of a kid’s show than something that will show civilization crumbing after the huge quake type scenario.

Spice and Wolf season 2 though is great. The production values have really increased this season since they changed studios…
