Eden of the East 11 (Final)

Summary:

All the naked guys pour into the mall and immediately go to find their cell phones.  Yutaka’s transmission was too large for the EotE cell phones, so Haruo brings the information up on Mikuru’s laptop while Saki explains what really happened on Careless Monday.  Akira posted up some information about Ryo’s first attack, and gathered up 20,000 NEET volunteers to help evacuate the 6 missile targets.  Unfortunately, the situation was weird and the evacuees were trolled into becoming suspcious of the NEETs for having so much information (and also occassionally looting the abandoned homes).  To shield the NEETs, Akira pretended to be the terrorist and then shipped all of the NEETs to Dubai for 3 months, before wiping his own memory.

The boys of EotE strip down to blend in, and while their pale skin and full hair gives them away, they are able to retrieve Mikuru’s laptop from the NEETs.  This ends up being a wasted effort, however, when Akira suddenly pushes a transmission to all the NEET and EotE phones telling them to come to the roof and figure out a way to stop the missiles from hitting Japan.  Juiz picks the best suggestion, and hacks into the Patriot Missile System to shoot down all the incoming Tomahawks.  As Akira watches with Saki, the plan succeeds and a still-alive Yutaka cheers from his hospital bed.  However, Akira knows that this incident will be even harder to cover up and asks Juiz to use his remaining funds to make him the King of Japan.  As he carries Saki in his arms, Akira gets another memory wipe and slips his phone into Saki’s pocket.

Reaction:

Although this is the final TV episode, there will be two movies to complete the story. The King of Eden will be aired on November 28 2009, and Paradise Lost will be shown sometime in January of 2010.

While this episode was exciting, I had a lot of issues with how things played out.  How can Akira become King of Japan for about half of his original budget?  And why wouldn’t the Supporter immediately come and kill Akira for exhausting the budget without saving Japan?  How can the Selecao phones lack a way to recharge the phone and yet keep a charge longer than other phones (e.g. Saki’s)?  What’s up with some of these wacky strategies for saving Japan?  Was that old taxi driver supposed to be Saizo?  How did that one NEET get back after only two months and score clothes and a fiance?  And who was that lady that Akira stole Mameshiba from?  I liked the theme of Akira reluctantly taking responsibility and power when so many smart individuals shy away, but I’m not sure how this will play out.

It’s funny that the solution was crowd-sourcing, and I think Yutaka’s going to have to tweak his Social Computer because rumors of his death were grossly exaggerated.  I really liked that Akira spent the last moments with Saki, but I was sad that they never got to ride the merry-go-round like in the promo art.  I wonder if Saki got the phone so that she can stop Akira from spending his final yen and getting killed, and if that is the plan I wonder how long Akira has before he falls afoul of the rule requiring funds be used regularly (not this even applies to Jintaro, apparently).  It’s going to be a long wait until the movies come out, but I’m excited to see how this story gets wrapped up, especially now that Akira doesn’t have memories or magical phone powers.

I’ll take a stab at your questions with some speculations:

How can Akira become King of Japan for about half of his original budget?  And why wouldn’t the Supporter immediately come and kill Akira for exhausting the budget without saving Japan?

Of course, by this interpretation should he fail to “save Japan” by becoming king, he’s a dead man.

Not sure how difficult and expensive it is to swap in some lines into the Japanese Constitution, but supposing that it exhausts his remaining cash, he won’t necessarily immediately die. I’d like to see it as the Supporter being flexible with the rule interpretations, specifically the part which says that you have to use the money and cause something to happen/result.

How can the Selecao phones lack a way to recharge the phone and yet keep a charge longer than other phones (e.g. Saki’s)

    Someone’s not paying attention =p
when you look at shots of the handphone, you’ll notice an infinite sign on the battery indicator. When No. 4’s phone was dissected, we din’t see space for a battery either.
I guess we just have to suspend our disbelief and call it ‘the wonders of technology’.

What’s up with some of these wacky strategies for saving Japan?

Probably the whole point of this game. Outside probably wants to see an unorthodox way to save Japan, since the usual means (by his definitions), don’t seem to be working.

Just my personal guess at how his brain works =p

How did that one NEET get back after only two months and score clothes and a fiance?

The NEET guy did divulge that they were put to work in Dubai, and my guess is that he earned his freedom to come back. You can’t possibly expect ALL of them to be as strong as that guy (hey, they WERE originally useless NEETs), do the rest were probably shipped back when the time came.

When you think about it, the Selecao program has just about the worst overdraft fees ever… :o

      /facepalm

      I should have known.

That makes sense actually. I guess he was just a go-getter who was unlucky, but his luck changed in Dubai. Got himself a vacation, a tan, a fiance; not bad for 2 months of work.

    It’s already possible.

“Okay if that wasn’t enough, there’s more futurist fantasms. You don’t need to charge it, yes you heard right. The case is covered in a photo sensitive nano material that converts sun light into energy. Oh my!”

I wonder if Akira gets charged for his calls to Juiz, or if those don’t count.

I’m most interested to know why Akira brainwashed himself a second time, right after he decided to tbe King, and why did he slip the phone to Saki after that. He must have had asked Juiz to get him to do that after his memory got wiped out.

Maybe you’re right about that last yen theory and hopes that Saki will prevent him from accidentally making a call and getting the supporter to go hunt him down.

I’m a bit surprised that he wiped his memory the first time too. Maybe he has some kind of tragic past where he can’t handle any kind of sadness. At least we never have to watch any boring Akira emo episodes, so I guess I should be thankful for the memory-wipe program.

As to WHY Akira isn’t dead, it’s because he DID save Japan. He stopped all 60 missiles from destroying their country!

I don’t think that can count, because he didn’t save Japan from itself, he saved it from the other Selecao. I’m thinking he’s still alive because he gets a certain amount of time before his plan is deemed a failure or a success. Too bad Hajime didn’t get that luxury. Hajime finished getting the hospital set up and once it get recognized as a legit place to be, the Supporter showed up (probably).
