White Album 04

Summary:

Rina calls Touya early in morning and tells him to be at Yuunagi Station at 10 AM. Yuki, however, planned the date for Hotarugasaki Station at 11 AM. Rina goes out in disguise to spend a little time with Touya beforehand, but Touya ends up going to Hotarugasaki Station at 10. Eventually Rina gets tired of waiting, and Touya bumps into Mana; Mana is rather rude and evasive and ends up ditching Touya (and class) after riding the bus with him to Hotarugasaki Academy. All the while, Yuki is waiting at the station for him at Hotarugasaki, and the two keep switching places and missing each other. They don’t meet up until much later, and Yuki reveals that Eiji wrote a sad, beautiful song to be Yuki’s debut single.

In a series of scenes, we see how Yuki mistakenly reached for Touya’s locker because she had the same locker in middle school, and Touya got kicked out of the house by his dad after his mom died. Yuki invites Touya over to her temporary apartment, and wants Touya to recognize the area as the mountain where she first met him. Unfortunately, Touya doesn’t remember that part and associates the area with Haruka and unpleasant memories. Yuki decides she might as well sleep with Touya then, so Touya sits in her super-sparse apartment while Yuki takes a shower to get ready.

Reaction:

I am now completely convinced that Rina is trying to poach Touya. I don’t think Rina realizes she is subconsciously trying to come on to Touya, but clearly Rina is trying too hard and justifying her actions as favors for Yuki. Rina basically messed up the entire date by interfering, and Eiji’s comment about “glass throat” Rina going through so many rehearsals just to buy time for Yuki was telling. Rina may not consciously know it, but she clearly wants Touya to manage her… in bed. Ironically, Touya comes to the same conclusion, but for all the wrong reasons.

So screw all these Touya-loving girls, I’m rooting for Yayoi. I felt a little bad for Haruka, but that girl is nuts; Rina is nice now, but I know she is going to give in to temptation and backstab Yuki. As for Yuki, after so long she hasn’t realized that she and Touya are not really that close and in fact barely know anything about each other. She doesn’t even like to look at his face when she hugs him! I’m willing to bet she makes him wear a paper bag over his head when she bangs him; their chemistry is just that good.

Here’s the caveat Yuki told Rina that Touya was habitually late, so in order to ensure Touya’s timely arrival Rina told Touya that the rendezvous was at 1000 hours since by her reckoning the habitually late Touya would be running an hour late. Rina’s mistake was in believing Yuki, who told her a lie, from which she acted upon. Rina arrived with the intention of doing so recon to ascertain how late Touya usually was.

As for the subsequent fuck ups it was mostly because Yuki and Touya were dumb and ran around like idiots. Touya went on a bus ride with the loli, so the blame is more his than Rina’s. Rina has only ever performed rearguard actions for Yuki, even if Yuki is undeserving of such a friend it is slanderous to suggest that Rina is poaching Touya when she has not done anything to indicate any desire to do so. Shoving Yuki against him is not going to help such a cause. In fact given how Touya is a dumb ass, the fissure will most likely come from him as the false notion that Rina likes him takes hold of his feeble and insignificant mind.

Rina is Yuki only back up link, as Yuki is busy with her debut, which she is celebrating all too early. If her work ethic remains inferior Yuki will reap the fate of Ranka, she may keep Touya because that sorry stack for shit is not Hime-class, let alone a human of any worth.

See, the thing is that Rina is inserting herself into the mix way too much to be simply trying to help Yuki. Stuff like the slap at the studio is ok, but changing the time and location at 5 in the morning just to make sure Touya won’t be late is not cool. It is common knowledge that Touya is a tardy idiot, so why confuse Touya any more? If Rina REALLY wanted to make sure he was on time, she would have paid Haruka to drag Touya out of bed and keelhaul him over to the station on her bicycle.

Quite frankly, I look forward to Yayoi crushing all of them and taking over Ogata Productions.

To be honest that its the same tactic my commanding officer uses to ensure that no one misses movement, secondly Rina has no idea how dumb Touya is. If Rina knew that Touya had trouble holding down a job and was only accepting charity in cash I am sure Rina would have ensured that Yuki would have been torn away from him in a manner most brutal.

Touya ought to be waking up at 5 in the morning considering he usually gets up later than 1100 hours. Rina knows Yuki is being dumb and is not using that direct line as well as she should. Just because Rina is meddlesome does not mean she is in anyway interested. The US meddled plenty in the affairs of others quite often during the Cold War, it did not mean that we liked any of them. Rina is merely perfecting her skills as a producer who are by nature meddlesome, after all the real money to be made in the music industry is in producing not singing.

I think Rina is swell so far, but I cannot root for anyone who likes Touya. He just sucks that much.

My problem is that Rina also tried to change the location of the date. I think Rina honestly believes she is not into Touya, but I’m telling you this is all foreshadowing.

Hopefully your commanding officer is better at using this tactic than Rina is… :|

My CO is backed with the power to court martial those who miss movement it provides enough in the way or properly motivating people. Yuunagi was one of two locations that Touya and Yuki had agreed upon, Rina changed nothing even Yuki went to Yuunagi as her first option. The problem before hand was that neither Touya nor Yuki were clear on the location, Yuki said over the phone that “it did not have to be Yuunagi” not that it was to be Hotarugasaki. More over given Touya’s propensity to follow shiny objects like an idiot the lion’s share of the blame is not Rina’s. They had agreed that either one would have been fine, after all even Yuki realized her mistake when she ran around with her head cut off.

Rina has yet to show any like for Touya, let alone is she making romantic overtures. As it stands it is probable that once distance does Yuki and Touya in that Rina will be the only link. Touya being a dumbass might then act on his arrogance and try something. Rina at this juncture could not be a traitor to Yuki, Touya’s loyalty is already in doubt and will most likely be the first to crumble.

I think I’m in between the both of you, but leaning a bit closer to the Crusader position. The decisive line in this ep in my opinion was her playful-giggly “Yuki won’t mind if I borrow him for an hour, right?”

The way I see it, this underlines that Yuki’s wishes DO matter for Rina. Yuki IS a close friend of hers, and therefore with this line she convinces herself that “it’s alright, isn’t it?”. This indicates that she is at least not CONSCIOUSLY trying to poach Touya yet. Because that would NOT be alright, no matter how you look at it.

I think that it’s a case of “what’s yours is mine too” in a girl friendship. Rina recognizes that he’s Yuki’s boyfriend, but she enjoyed spending some time with him too. The goddess line absolutely went down well with Rina (see the repetitions in the phone call in ep3 and her thoughts in ep4), and she wants more of that. It tickles her. And she feels that after what she’s done to get Yuki and him together, she’s entitled to a slice of goddess cake too.

Once she tries to SERIOUSLY pursue Touya, she won’t be able to maintain the friendship with Yuki anymore. Then you’ll see her rationalize things differently. It won’t be a cookie-stealing minor issue anymore, but more along the lines of “she never cared all that much about him in the first place, but I will” or worse. It will almost certainly get to this point eventually … but not yet.

    Girls And Their Touyas

    First, the obligatory OTL

Ok now that’s done: Perhaps cloning is the answer!

    @ Crusader:

Touya being a dumbass might then act on his arrogance and try something. Rina at this juncture could not be a traitor to Yuki, Touya’s loyalty is already in doubt and will most likely be the first to crumble.

Touya’s loyalty is a total joke. He’s supposed to be trying to meet up with Yuki and he is checking out the highschool girls in their bloomers and daydreaming about Rina. The problem is that girls really seem to respond to him.

    @ Mentar:

You might be in for an unpleasant surprise :-> … it shows SIX girls!

NOOOO!!! Ganbatte Yayoi :( … I am seriously going to cry if it turns out that Yayoi is sabotaging Yuki in order to get Touya for herself.

This is exactly how I see things going down. Although Mana’s complaining annoyed me a little, I’m glad she called out Touya on this whole goddess crap. Grrrrr… Touya… From the way that White Album is described, however, I am almost convinced that Yuki will succeed somehow. Maybe she and Touya will get through and their relationship will be stronger in the end?

    @ Zyl:

Oh, Stripey’s answer is probably gonna be bigamy. (insert smirk emoticon)

I’d actually expect his answer to be pick Mana because she’s the jailbait-iest looking most imouto-ish one ;) .

Rina’s insistance in doing good is past suspicious ; she’s clearly after Touya. She didn’t make her move yet because we needed some hot body love between Touya and Yuki so that the betrayal would sting sweet baby cells.
Those backstabbing love-harem stories should really learn to make a good lead ; I’m not asking for some flawless character, but having spineless morons all the time is quite tiring. Or is that the supposed Eroge’s player profile they’re going for ?

The Rina fans who see her as nothing else but a selfless goddess are in denial of her HONTOU NO JIBUN, from the way I see it. I mean, Rina even said that her “application as the Candidate for [Touya's] Goddess” is ongoing, and she even called Touya up after the practice, thinking he’d be already home by that time (I only noticed this after my 3rd rewatch, gosh I’m so slow). Perhaps her intention is not *yet* to steal Touya from Yuki, but as Mentar also said, there’s that “girls like me also want to have fun with Touya” thing going on.

Would you want to shop for your own ingredients for a home-cooked meal, or just get delivery? This is the question we must ask ourselves as we watch Rina watch Touya.
