Shikabane Hime: Aka 04

Summary:

Idol Osaki Kun is (ironically) dropping her new album Life, and getting ready for a concert. She was sick for a while, but now she’s back as a shikabane. It’s cool, though, cause the mafia is willing to kiss up to her for power. Moreover, the mysterious evil guy from last time (wearing red and shaking a mysterious red cube) calls Kun’s manager to warn her that Keisei and Makina are coming. Without the element of surprise, Makina gets beat up by Kun’s voice blasts and has to retreat. Meanwhile, Isaki Shuuji and Minai rescue Keisei from the mafia, even though it means Minai has to beat on some live humans.

While researching the the Hoshimura family fire, Ouri discovers that the family was connected to Keisei’s temple of the Kougan Cult. At the ruins of the temple he finds Makina’s gravestone and a wounded Makina. Ouri gives her a ride back and helps her stumble in to fight against Kun. Before things get too bad, Keisei reveals himself, hands Makina some special bullets, absorbs a vocal blast into his staff, heals Makina with a hug, distracts Kun with her own CD, and snipes the now-chiken-shikabane-Kun in the uvula with a seedling watered with holy water. This sets up Makina for the easy victory, and we get Kun’s haunting single as the ED.

Reaction:

Makina trying to infiltrate the dressing room in a Pizza Crown uniform totally brought out Hitman vibes for me. There was a big info dump this episode, and now we know that the special Contracted Priest really does heal his shikabane with hugs! Keisei mentions that this costs some of his life energy, so I wonder if he is wounded or weakened after every hug. Keisei was pretty studly this episode, although the part where he was grooving with Kun’s CD before getting kicked in the back by Makina was hilarious. I also like how he gave all his Moe Senshi junk to Ouri so that Makina wouldn’t be able to throw the otaku loot in the garbage.

The villain this time was fairly lame, but the overarching story is starting to take shape. I look forward to hearing why the Hoshimura family was murdered, and what that guy with the red box has to do with everything. No doubt all of this will tie in to those weird red grabby visions that Makina sometimes has as well as the fact that it sounds like she died and was forcibly resurrected.
