Maria Holic 01

Summary:

Miyamae Kanako, a second year high school transfer student, arrives at Ame no Kisaki Academy where she hopes to find love just like her parents. Kanako’s father was a teacher at the all-girls academy, and Kanako has a lot of trouble with boys (due to past trauma/teasing, contact with boys causes Kanako to break out in hives). This new school seems perfect, in spite of oddities like the neko-mimi loli Dorm Leader and her watchdog Yonakuni. Furthermore, Kanako is entranced by the beautiful Shidou Mariya (accompanied by rude maid Shinoji Matsurika).

Unfortunately, Kanako later stumbles into Mariya’s room and finds Matsurika helping Mariya into a fake set of boobs and a corset. Mariya isn’t a cosplayer or pervert, so his intentions are mysterious. Before Kanako can turn Mariya in, however, Mariya rips off Matsurika’s top and threatens to label Kanako a lesbo-assaulter. Knowing that no one would believe her over Mariya, Kanako is forced into 24/7 Mariya-surveillance. With that, poor lesbian Kanako loses her graceful tall roommate Ishima Ryuuken and gains the secretly cruel Mariya as a roommate.

Reaction:

I know that this is a nitpick, but why would Kanako break into hives after that first kiss with Mariya? I got the impression that the hives were psychological in nature, so Kanako shouldn’t have broken out before she knew Mariya’s secret. Maybe her tall 1:1 scale Gundam body had a Newtype reaction to Mariya (or his pheromones). I did, however, appreciate the crotch-check, as bust-checks are unreliable.

As for the rest of the episode, it was fairly standard and close to the manga. Kanako is a bit annoying, and I recall now why Shaft always bugged me in the past. Mariya was much better, and I liked his deeper voice too. I haven’t read too far in the manga so I hope this show gets better. I’m worried it will devolve into cliche fake-shoujo-ai jokes and annoying Shaft-isms, but I’ll give it a chance since OtoBoku was pretty enjoyable.

Don’t tell me that Sayonara Zetsubou sensei bugged you;p Annoying reactions were one of its most advantages as a parody. Mria+Holic is also such show, but here they really are overdoing this part. For me ep1 was quite good however i hope that new episodes will be more entertaining.
I think that I’m going to far in speculations but maybe the hives are caused by a skin with other pH, because men and women have slightly other ph and more (i don’t know the correct world, like the skin with acne…) oily? skin. But the difference is so small that even the cosmetics companies don’t mention it. It’s probably just an irrational anime moment ;p

Or to much knowledge on unimportant subjects;p But yeah I also titled it as overinterpretation.

It’s hard to find a show that’s relevant to many of my more… indecent… interests. This is one of them. SHAFT working on it was just icing on the case for me. :P

Yeah, I thought the hives thing was interesting. Could it be that somewhere along the line Kanako can develop a resistance to Mariya (reverse the physical process). I haven’t read the manga so I don’t know.
