Little Mikuriya Jin spots an evil spirit spider which he wants to use to scare his buddy Aoba Tsugumi (childhood friend alert). Before he can do it, however, a beautiful shrine maiden appears and vaporizes the spider before disappearing. Years later, the sacred tree protecting the land is torn down because of some land reclamation, and Jin uses some of the sacred wood to carve a statue of the miko for his district art festival. With Jin’s latent supernatural ability and the powers of the wood, guardian spirit Nagi pops out and is none too pleased to find her tree was chopped down.
Jin recognizes Nagi as the shrine maiden from his flashback, but Nagi doesn’t remember that incident. Without the tree, Nagi is too weak to vanquish Impurities without equipment. Nagi is inspired by TV to create a mahou shoujo wand, and Jin turns out to be fairly useful because he can spot and grab Impurities without getting tainted much (Nagi cannot touch the Impurities or she gets a bad rash). With that, it’s some moving-in hijinks as Jin tries to resist the temptation to molest Nagi in her sleep.
Reaction:
First off, I am declaring for the Nagi camp, simply because we finally have a girl who can appreciate puns. We haven’t even met the other characters, but I don’t care because Nagi is the only character I need. I liked her character design for the beginning, but the joke following the tai/taiyaki moment secured it for me. I liked the OP idea, with Nagi learning to dance and do idol stuff, but the music didn’t really do it for me (and the ED was just boring).
Jin putting all his naughty magazines in an unsealed box labeled “textbooks” was a total tactical failure. I am surprised he didn’t come back from late night shopping with some see-through lingerie, but clearly he is a cowardly pervert. Unlike other harem males, however, at least Jin will always have a purpose. Basically, Jin is like the tee in golf; he exists solely to help you hit your target.
