We get a quick flashback of young Ichinose Kazune watching his senpai Eiichiro quit violin for lack of talent. Flash-forward to the future and Kazune is playing his final concert to an enraptured audience. It’s Minamo’s first classical music concert and she is totally wowed by Kazune’s playing. When she meets him backstage, Kazune explains he always wanted to be just like Eiichiro, but Eiichiro never came to any of his concerts. Kazune then asks Minamo to give Eiichiro his violin back; Kazune feels his body is too old and he will never be able to play the kind of music Eiichiro would like.
A little Holonpedia research shows that Eiirchiro was quite a musical prodigy and able to master impressive just intonation skills. However, Eiichiro considers that nothing but a technique as real talent requires love to go beyond what is practical. Right now Eiichiro is way more interested in the Earth Balance, and Masamichi wonders if he can ever catch up to Eiichiro. At the end, Minamo helps Kazune understand that Kazune still needs to play music even if Eiichiro is too much of a jerk to come to Kazune’s concerts.
Reaction:
What was up with all the math in this episode? It was awesome watching Souta get totally bored while Holon explained the ratios in just intonation; it looked like he was trying to make it through an episode of Spice and Wolf or something. Minamo was not as important this episode, though her recorder playing was cute. Even if Kazune is getting feeble, he should still be able to play the violin… it’s not like it requires that much movement. Plus, can’t Kazune play violin in the Metal or something?
I appreciated learning more about Eiichiro, though I wish I knew why he still looks so studly while everyone else got old and withered. Eiichiro quitting music in an emo fit was great, but I liked how the characters talked about talent and pi. This really helped frame the mission regarding the Earth Balance, and gave a little insight into how serious Eiichiro and Masamichi are about researching the Earth Balance.
