Summary:
Of course Alto is still alive since he bailed from his crappy plane in the nick of time. Alto reminds everyone that there is no way that Ranka could possibly be that large, and everyone realizes that it is just Battle Galaxy projecting a hologram of Ranka. Everyone stops trying to fly under the skirt of the giant Ranka and blasts Battle Galaxy. Macross Quarter defolds to join the fray, and Brera switches loyalties after getting caught in a blast that destroys the device enslaving him. Then Jeffrey and Cathy tell everyone about how Leon killed Howard, and loli-Klan Klein brings Alto his VF-25.
Grace is able to use her Monster Cables to deploy her loss-less galaxy-wide neural net and command Vajra to attack as far away as Macross 11 and even Macross City on Earth. However, Brera, Alto, and Sheryl team up to snap Ranka out of her funk and the combined song of Ranka and Sheryl overrides Grace’s orders. The Vajra help the humans out, and Brera tells Alto to aim for the Queen’s head (the Vajra heart is in the belly). Alto snipes Grace out with Mikhail’s gun, and the humans and Vajra make plans to open a bunch of new malls on the planet.
Reaction:
When I first watched this episode, I was a bit unsure about the execution, especially with the spamming of every single Macross Frontier song. Also, the Richard Bilrer-Lynn Minmay thing was stupid. However, I did like how they wrapped up the tale of the Vajra. It makes sense that the Vajra didn’t understand that all humans were different and so they figured Ranka was being held hostage. This even explains why Vajracteria try to eat your brain. Fortunately, the power of naked karaoke brought the Vajra back to their senses. Speaking of which, the revelation that Aimo is a mating song is just incredibly funny. I guess that Vajra just ended up humping the Research Fleet’s ships to death…
I liked how Klan Klein got to take Mikhail’s VF-25 and how Alto took Grace out with Mikhail’s sniper gun. If I learned anything from this series, it’s that sniping is way overpowered. Grace was scary-looking this episode, and we never found out who those male voices belonged to. As for Ranka and Sheryl, I wasn’t surprised that Alto didn’t choose either one since he finally got an atmosphere to fly around in. Ever since Jesus-Ranka moved Sheryl’s Vajracteria to the intestines, the two of them can communicate with the Vajra; I figure the upcoming OVA will deal with how Ranka and Sheryl decide to ditch Alto and just make out with each other in between naked karaoke sessions.

Bet those voices were some sort of hallucinations Grace was having, or Grace had allies, that are still out there, which means.. SECOND SEASON GET! Maybe? Please?
I’ve waited an entire season for Grace to pull a SHODAN impersonation:
Look at you, pilot. A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you fly through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?
But to no avail.
I’m hoping the OVA will be an extended, uncensored version of the medley too.
Kawamori has been asked many times if we will ever know what happened to Minmei it was not stupid it was a blatant troll.
Grace has been dead before, she will be back along with her friends in good time.
As to m,y Alto-hime not making a decision, the decision hime made in episode 24 still stands, and Ranka has her work cut out for her, but unless you think little Miss no development can pull it off my Alto-hime will wed Sheryl long before Ranka enters womanhood. My Alto-hime did put the mission to save Ranka on hold every time Sheryl was in trouble, and they did salute each other while Ranka was no looking…Also my Alto-hime did not look delighted to see Ranka again for the first time.
I am sure my Alto-hime was banking left to pick up Sheryl for a ride in his arms. What is important is that Ranka had her last chance to grow tabled in favor of Battle Frontier/Macross Quarter vs Battle Galaxy.
I wasn’t sure who the voices were either, I just assumed they were Vajra or something. Maybe the OAV will sort that out, although I wasn’t aware one was being planned.
All in all I think this was a decent ending (it certainly looked and sounded spectacular…Sheryl’s outfit was much better in this episode!), although I was hoping for some sort of resolution to the love triangle. I guess I was expecting one since all the other Macross series/movies I’ve seen so far have resolved the romantic aspect to the plot. Maybe that OAV will sort this out? Likewise watching Leon squirm during his court-martial.
If nothing else, Sheryl’s V-type infection was cured…the only side-effect being that because the Vajracteria are now in the digestive system, they’d make the hapless sufferer fart fold waves after a bad curry. It’s not life threatening, but could be embarrassing in certain social circles.
I both hated and loved the crazy remix. It was too much bits of all songs and nothing that really connected them (for example DYRL has a beautiful song fight scene and it’s not insane)
I want Ranka and Sheryl to end up together just to throw cold water on all those Sheryl/Ranka-tards, they really get on my nerves.
I can sum up what I liked about this in one word: nipples.
And the music reminded me of the early 90s when techno/club tunes first became mainstream and all kinds of 80s hitmakers came back with “megamix” tunes. You’d think you were hearing the real song and then the next tune would pop in, like “hey, I’m a ridiculous megamix!”
Zan: I believe it. Grace got nuked before and that was no big deal, so she could definitely still be out there holding her hopes and dreams.
Shin: This series definitely needs some omake episodes. If done right, gag episodes could be the stuff of legends.
Crusader: Maybe once Alto scratches that atmosphere itch he can get back to loving Sheryl and dressing up as a girl. There’s still hope; how many episodes has it been since Alto last made a paper airplane (or is that because Frontier was dangerously low on all supplies)?
Martin: I have no reason to suspect that there is an omake OVA planned. I think I am just spoiled by all the Shana-tan shorts. I’m glad the love triangle was left unresolved, as it was so half-hearted all along.
As for your comment about the Vajracteria… If Ranka feels pain every time a Vajra gets shot down (or forced to listen to Grace-remix Aimo), doesn’t that mean that Ranka feels pleasure every time a Vajra feels pleasure?
yaku: That remix at the end sucked. It sounded like something thrown together on Youtube. The real question is, when Ranka sings Aimo now, will Sheryl defold next to her?
otou-san: The general nakedness of the episode was so pointless! Vajranet is very liberal I suppose.
I agree with yaku that some parts of the megamix didn’t mesh in well, but it was still very kickass! There is not one song from that megamix that I haven’t listened to at least 40 times
I kept fist-pumping throughout the whole episode! It was madness! =3
I guess the Minmay part was just fanboy bait, cause when I saw it, I was like, “OH MA GAWD MINMAY!!! MINMAYMINMAYMINMAY! MAY I HAVE A MINUTE WITH YOU? *the series ends*….F@CK YOU!!!” very disappointing
I didn’t know there was an OVA being made, but I do know that there is a theatrical version of the series coming out.
oh boy…why?! WHY!!?!?! I’ll admit that I was too noob to realize these cables were way overpriced when I bought them around the time of the HD-boom (around 3-4 years ago). The worst part is that I don’t even use my HDMI monster cables anymore
…they have a very nice coating though… mmmm
The part where they slice the head off of the Queen and see Grace all naked and tentacled reminded me of that line in the Iron Man movie:
HARR HARR Iron Man never has to iron out his clo-*EXPLODES*

Here lies a consummate (still don’t know what that means) and invaluable distasteful pun-er to His Highness Kabitzin vi Seaslug, 1st Emperor of the Holy Seaslug Empire
I half-expected Alto, Sheryl and Ranka to shout “Macross Gattai” when they crossed their hands but alas it never happened which reduced the fun factor quite a bit.
There should have at least been a “Gooooooo…. Team!”
How come Ai-kun never cybered with them? Seems like he would have been interested.
