I made it through another season of ZnT, and even low expectations were not fulfilled. Watching ZnT is like listening to a crappy broken record, where things keep resetting and repeating. Unlike everyone else, however, I will probably keep watching ZnT sequels as long as they keep coming out. I’ve invested so much time in this series already that it is easy to keep going. If it weren’t for ZnT, it’d be hard to balance all the reviews of good anime series against reviews of bad anime series. ZnT keeps me grounded.
Story
Story? What story? The whole season was a series of simulations for Joseph. Did anything actually happen this season? We met some elves and some new students. We watched Sheffield lust after Joseph. We saw Tabitha get added to Saito’s harem. Other than that, all we got were some mysterious rumblings about devilish void users trying to revive some ancient evil. Big deal, it will be at least two seasons before we even figure out WTF that warning means.
The first few episodes were decent, and I started hoping that this season would outdo season 2. However, while the season 3 lows were not as low, the highs were not as high either. There was no awesome Saito vs. the Huge Stupid Army fight. There was no Saito-Louise marriage this time. Colbert-sensei came back, but who cares? That just eliminated the only loss that Saito has experienced. Does anyone die in this series (besides Wales)?
Characters
Unlike last season where Agnes jacked the show, the new side characters mostly stayed in the background this time. However, we sure met a lot of new characters this season. Most of them were ok though, so no complaints from me on that front. The character who continues to make me rage is Louise. Her tsundere seems random and bipolar. Why exactly does Saito like her? It’s such a mystery. Saito and Louise continue to go nowhere, and the tension isn’t there. I don’t even care about their romance anymore; it’s like the boy who cried wolf.
I thought Tabitha was a good replacement for Kirche in the harem. Kirche was always too flighty, and when Siesta took on the mantle of “skanky harem member” there was no role for Kirche. Fortunately her buddy Tabitha brought Kirche a new/old guy and then tagged in. Finally, someone to fight Louise on the flat-chested front. I really wanted Henrietta to get her game on, but she ended up making Louise her sister! What a waste, unless Henrietta decides to poach Saito anyway.
Tilt
The animation and art were good and very consistent. I didn’t like the OP/ED that much and the BGM didn’t really catch my ear that often. Voice acting was good as usual, so I have to give props to the studio for at least making sure ZnT continues to look and sound good.
Verdict
My main problem with this season was that every intriguing problem was easily resolved and afterwards nothing had changed. The loss of the Gandalfr runes was kinda cool, but afterwards it was no big deal. The loss of the Void power was just stupid as hell, and had the same result. Joseph didn’t do a damn thing all season long, and we never got to see him chat with Henrietta at the conference. Season 3 was a whole lot of nothing, with zero plot advancement.
