Macross Frontier 17

Summary:
Ozma’s been thinking about the past, like when Ranka was a neko-mimi loli eating his crappy pineapple cake. Then Cathy got tired of Ozma always running off instead of spooning, so she got engaged to Leon. Speaking of Leon, we get a meeting between Dude-Grace and Luca where we find out that Fold Quartz is harvested from Vajra gallbladders or something. Leon and Grace are at odds with Mr. Bilrer, but someone is planning to have a monopoly on intergalactic shipping.

Cathy and Ozma suspect Leon and “someone with implants” but get called away to battle. Unfortunately, it turns out Vajra evolve constantly and quickly become invulnerable to almost any weapon used against them. This is why Ranka’s singing is needed. Ozma thinks this is BS and just knifes all the Vajra, but later as he’s watching Ranka’s concert he starts bleeding all over the place. In spite of all the pineapple references, Ozma lives after being transported to the hospital, and later Sheryl gives Grace the cold shoulder.

Reaction:
I was not at all worried about Ozma in this episode, as the art was much too poor for this to be his sendoff. I was also confused about the male singer during the Vajra battle; what the heck was that about? Other than that, there was a lot to like in this episode (despite the heavy-handed pineapple pandering). Nanase got a job as a costume designer on Ranka’s team, Ai-kun (short for Aimo…) took out Alto’s paper plane in a hilarious scene, and we got to see Klan Klein fixing her eyebrows in hopes of scoring a date with Mikhail.

If the Vajra can adapt so easily, shouldn’t humanity be worried that Ai-kun is gradually getting sick/immune of Ranka’s music? There was a snippet where they showed little Ai-kun-esque Vajra hatching somewhere, but perhaps because the singing doesn’t directly hurt the Vajra they don’t develop immunity. It’s interesting that Ozma has figured out who Brera is, and I loved the scene where they guy cleaning Ozma’s plane got this look on his face like, “Damn, who forgot to bring extra tampons?!”

The music from the male singer is from macross 7.

How the hell did Ozma survive that direct hit? Those red vajra shots cut through a friggin capital ship in the first ep and all he lost was one of his boosters.

Perhaps part of the evolution caused the Vajra lasers to suck.

This was pretty much an almost blow-by-blow homage to SDF Macross’ episode 18, mind you, which pretty much solidified Pineapple Salad’s reputation as the FOOD OF DOOM in Macross. Except Ozma seems to have survived.

It seems in its cake form, pineapple is painful, but not deadly. In salad form, however, even the fumes can prove fatal.

Kabitzin you lie! Give Mr. Kawamori his due you bought it to a point… admit it!

Well it seems Kawamori’s troll-fu was good enough to have a lot of people fooled until the last minute. It seems that either the hot Cathy Lurvin, baking, Kamina’s spirit, or and combination thereof negates the Pineapple as the DOOM of Aces.

It looks like Alto-hime just met his future nemesis. Ai-kun might very well be the one who loves Ranka the most. Soon there will be a legion of Ai-kuns following Ranka around. Though it seems that Ai-kun instinctively destroys all planes of every sort. I doubt Alto-hime and Ai-kun will be getting along. Let’s hope Brera gets his face bitten off first…

Wasn’t it sufficiently obvious? The Vajra copy everything they come across. So they are either Chinese or Swedish, considering their power probably a mix of both. That’s also why they are usually kept away from music. They wouldn’t be able to do anything but sharing files all day along.

However Macrossvision the ultimate DRM is still undefeated, even SMS doesn’t have a backdoor, so there’s no way to copy the real thing when it comes to music. That’s why they have to bring the singers to the battlefield.

I still wonder why Leon was messing around with his Windows installation but maybe he was just trying to impress Canneloni err… Angeloni with his 1337 h3×0r skillz.

I can’t believe I thought that Ranka was singing the very first song. Then I turned up the volume and it turned out to be some old geezer or something lols

I applaud your ability to tell if a character survives through the budget poured into the episode in question.

How dare you imply Ranka’s music can get tiresome after a while. ;P Still, if Grace is the one who keeps churning out the hits, then things may turn out ugly.

All of the male songs in this episode were Firebomber songs from Macross 7. The point is, Ozma is an old foggie and he listens to ‘oldies’ heh.

As for why that particular song was playing during the battle:

So basically this episode was an homage to both Macross 7 and the original Macross.

I like how Michael has that Sheryl pill sitting in his locker… I like how he’s just holding onto it and not going to do anything about it…

In Macross, everything important happens in episodes with awesome animation.

I was curious about the pill taped inside Mikhail’s locker. Why is he keeping it in there? Shouldn’t he have it analyzed?

I think that’s why he was asking Klein about Theresa-chan. I’m guessing he’s trying to get the pill analyzed “off the grid”.

AWESOME insight! That totally makes sense now and indicates he is trying to protect his little lover should anything go wrong!

ajanhelendam:that’s exactly what i thought when i watched the episode. i’ve just been waiting for someone to analyze one of sheryls pills. i like how they are putting each of the crew in different jobs where they certantly will get some important information they can act on.

i’m hoping for sherylxmichael allthough he’ll prolly end up with klan klein. i don’t see her charm, i mean she’s beautifull as a giant, the sex must be awfull and i’m not inclined to lolis.

informational tidbit:klan mens clan in my language. klein means the way you are when you have been drinking the night before but don’t feel nausia or headache, but don’t feel completly well either. you just don’t feel well. this makes her name a little bit funny to me.

Ozma can’t die cause he has the force. Literally a force field, the pin point barrier system.
