No news on a release date, but some of the features being discussed for WP 2.7 sound rather promising:
WordPress core updates – This is a feature many users have been waiting for, with core updates you can easily upgrade your WordPress versions.
Comment Threading – This feature will allow users to reply to other commentators in a threaded manner, where replied comments will display below the actual comment, WordPress already has the ability to scale to accomodate threaded comments, without requiring database changes.
Widgets for Dashboard and Write Box – This feature will allow users to re-arrange the widgets on the dashboard and write page to suit their preferences.
The threaded comment feature caught my eye, as this is relevant to SS!AB readers. I am eager to see what the WP team comes up with and how well it will work in practice. Many of the new features can already be simulated with existing plugins, but I prefer to hold off on certain features (such as tagging) until they receive native support. This is doubly true when I think the feature will eventually be integrated and I don’t want to have to do a conversion. There’s a sparse official list of features available on the Codex as well.
Edit: Here’s some news about the changes to the User Interface:
- Dashboard Changes: What the heck is Inbox? I’m a little unsure about this change, although having a Write Post area on the dashboard seems intuitive.
- Write Panel Widgets: Excellent. There are so many parts I don’t use, and it will be great to be able to turn them off and/or rearrange them. The categories are back on the sidebar!
- Navigation Links on Left: It eats up some space, but the tabs were getting harder to read (especially the part with all the plugin settings).
- Plugin Upgrades: It will be very convenient to be able to search for and install plugins directly from your WP-Admin area. It’s about time they added Uninstall support for plugin authors, so that users aren’t left with database kruft/tables after a plugin is deactivated/deleted.
- Built-in Sticky Support: I’m surprised this wasn’t natively supported before.
Overall these look great with some handy interface tweaks and the really nice upgrade tools for plugins and WP core files.
