Summary:
The Meta-Real construction is way behind schedule, but Haru Masamichi and his boss Kushima Eiichiro have something else on their mind. Masamichi is doing some risky free-diving in spite of the increased molecular density in the area. Masamichi hopes to discover the Earth Order, and there is a lot of talk about intuition. Unfortunately, as Masamichi gets close to the ocean floor, it looks like the ocean is aflame in blue, and he is suddenly assaulted by gigantic blood platelets. Eiichiro barely gets Masamichi up in time, but when Masamichi regains consciousness 50 years have passed.
Since the accident, the Meta-Real has been finished and Masamichi got a cyberbrain installed. He’s been having his android assistant Holon do dives for him as he continues to search for the Earth Order, and he refuses to enter to Meta-Real to help out Eiichiro (who has not aged at all). However, because Holon has to undergo some maintenance, Masamichi gets an intern named Aoi Minamo. Minamo is ever the intuitive optimist, and her hopeful words inspire Masamichi when some devastating Type Alpha Stoke Waves hit the island.

Well, a whole lot of information was crammed into this episode, but I suspect that much of it will be expanded upon in time. It sucks that Masamichi’s buddy looks just as good 50 years later, and I can’t believe they couldn’t hook Masamichi up (considering he was already getting a cyberbrain). At least in the Meta-Real Masamichi can look young again, and now it’s time to do some hardcore troubleshooting. Speaking of hardcore, the ED music was badass, especially with all the tough-looking penguins and mackerel shots.
I wonder if Masamichi’s messed up body was allowed to stay unchanged because the secret of the Earth Order was branded into his chest. Souta’s statement that pre-cyberbrain memories are useless was very interesting to me, but not nearly as interesting as his sweet fight against Holon. However, if I learned anything from Seirei no Moribito it’s that there will probably be one more awesome fight in the first five episodes and then we won’t see another fight until around episode 20.

It’s sad to know that there are those who shun Real Drive because of the “fat girls”
First off, Holon is awesome. Second, all the unnecessary fanservice shots of Minamo kinda make me uncomfortable. Third, fanservice shots of Masamichi make me giggle.
The character designs of the ladies actually drew me to the show. So far the only one that threw me off a bit was the Secretary General.
It is a pity.
They miss out on one of the most moe character in anime this year, Amy :3
It is a nice show. Kind of oyaji-ish but it is pretty neat.
Unnecessary? Yeah. But they’re bringing healthy back, so I don’t mind. :P
I didn’t even realize how often you can see Minamo’s panties before you mentioned it. Perhaps because it’s just the natural result of wearing an uniform with a short skirt. Ever since I’ve seen Mayu’s pants in Captain Harlock, I don’t really mind this phenomenon anymore.
Healthy, I like that.
But don’t worry too much about the fanservicey stuff, they really tone it down after the first couple episodes.
The show is (so far, and I’m current on it) pretty light stuff for Masumune Shirow. But it’s a nice flipside to his usual concepts. Everyone isn’t a crazed terrorist and you get to see some of the more personal implications of a cyber-style future. That’s not to say it’s all fluff, just more human.
OMG Shin I just don’t like the improbability of the character designs dammit. Sekeirei is annoying too for that respect. I wasn’t really drawn to the plot of this show though, seemed like an entire show of the most boring parts of GiTS without the cool action scenes to balance it out.
I think the point that many people are trying to make is that (ironically) the female character designs of RD are much more realistic than the female character designs of other anime series. Even the Secretary General is healthy enough that her cup size is not completely unrealistic.
However, I can understand your opinion that RD is like Ghost In The Slice-of-Life.
I thought the Secretary General looked like a castaway from Dragonaut also I wonder if she makes all her phone calls like that? hmmm. I dunno why but I originally though the show was about roller blading, before watching it that is.
I know I make all my video conferencing calls like that.
Look kids, we’ve survived Bakuretsu Tenshi. To us veterans, the Secretary General is virtually a DFC.
I have to agree with the unnecessary Minamo fanservice! Shes so sweet and innocent that I feel the need to look away at those parts! *blush* It just seems so wrong… AND YET I LOOK ANYWAYS! *DROOL*
