Kabitzin’s July 2008 List

The summer season is in full swing, and some of the new shows are better than anticipated. A few of the shows from last month’s list have finished up, but I still haven’t had a chance to check out all the new shows. I also marathoned Blassreiter this month, and it was (surprisingly) glorious. Mentar was absolutely correct in his description, but unfortunately the subs on the latest episodes have been slow to come out and so Blassreiter didn’t make my list this month. It’s too bad, because Amanda is fantastic and I like how the adoption angle ended up being something angst-worthy instead of just an excuse for the main character to bang his sister without worrying about retarded babies.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Code Geass R2: Code Geass continues to deliver the same trashy entertainment that we have come to expect and love. Ninja-Sayoko and Britannia-Kallen have been welcome wardrobe additions, and the Siegfried was good for a laugh. However, if Shirley comes back with a mask on, I am going to scream.
  2. Macross Frontier: They’re dumping on Sheryl so hard, but at the same time Ranka is a single mom with a Vajra baby (or something). I’m still in the dark about all the shady alliances, but I do know this: you just can’t trust cyborg managers. More importantly, Kira! E(=__O)o
  3. Soul Eater: It’s been another month of seamless transitions from manga to anime, and the test episode was fantastic. I think we’re starting to get to the meat of the main arc, so I’m really excited to see some of the better fights animated.
  4. Birdy the Mighty Decode: While it hasn’t been anything revolutionary, Birdy has been very solid in the early episodes. I like the pace and the animation, so I think this will continue to be a fun, short ride.
  5. Zero no Tsukaima 3: I was all ready to continue hating this show, but ZnT3 is quickly making season 2 feel like just a bad memory. The plot development has been snappy, and so far the romantic development between Louise and Saito has been fulfilling.

Rising:

  • Sekirei: I still hate the Dragonaut-class torpedo jugs, but episode 3 won me over. Although this show starts off painfully cliche, some of the jokes are amusing and the battles are surprisingly well-animated. My favorite moments so far have been the Musubi blade-break, the Musubi switch-hands-like-Jordan modesty move (subtle, but so skillful!), and the constant use of Ashikabi as a stand-in for E-Peen. This show feels like Love Hina meets Rozen Maiden, but in the campiest way possible.

Falling:

  • Blade of the Immortal: Unfortunately, all the classic Bee Train screwups are back in full force. Maybe BotI will pick up, but the early episodes have me convinced that I won’t be blogging this show (even if I end up watching it).
  • Chocolate Underground: Even with such short episodes, the corniness of this show is overwhelming. The premise and execution of this show are so much worse than their Toshokan Sensou counterparts.
  • Slayers Revolution: I guess some things from your youth are not as great as you remember them. I wouldn’t say it’s been bad so far (in spite of that Digimon), but I’ve been really unfulfilled by the first few episodes.

I heard Kabitzin watches fanservice animu. Is this true?

On a whim, I got the book that Chocolate Underground is based on. So far, it’s proved to be much better, for the correct demographic. Not exactly hard material to read but enjoyable.

I’m glad that the Birdy OVA is only 4 epis, so I’ll have to catch up with that first, even though I hear its not necessary (i think). It feels so wrong watching/playing something when you haven’t followed the origins. Well, I guess there are some exceptions, like novels still in Japanese -_-

Despite not liking Slayers anymore, I still love that old-school feel of the OP! How I miss Megumi! ^_^

You can only blame yourself for being such a lazy commenter. Also, I told you this before, leave Epi out of this.

Whaat??? LAZY COMMENTER?!?!?! YOU CALLIN’ ME FAT, BOY?! =3 jkjk, but yea… I’m sorry for not being here 3 years ago to comment like you! I know you would have loved me then as much as now!

I will have 4 Epis, Sir Chris, even if you say otherwise! *ready to duke it out*

On topic, I sort of wanted to check out Chocolate Underground (it being so short), but if you say it sucks, I have no objections!… although I tend to like “corniness” =3

I have to give a special shout-out to Mnemosyne. If I had blogged it, I think I would have given out my first 0/5. The suckitude of this show was truly epic. I also couldn’t stop laughing at Eipos.

Kabitzin: Good list! I think that I’d have the top5 exactly like this, with the exception that I don’t watch Soul Eater and would put Blassreiter there. Below the top2 due to two unpleasant heavy-handed flashback eps 13+14, but now that the setting has been adjusted for the “present”, the awesome ep15 more than made up for it.

The “subs” from O-L for Blassreiter are effectively only transcripts from the official streaming airings. I’d suggest that you marathon on to the ending episode 12 of the first half.

*sips it like a wine taster* Hmmm, not bad, not bad XD! If you usually have puns like these on your blog, maybe I should start reading it  ! (although there is this strange problem in which none of your pictures load unless I shut down my firewall… i’ll just have to configure that)

and whaaa??? Is Mnemosyne really that bad? It seemed like a series that had it all (action, tits) And I downloaded the very high quality 700mb versions to marathon too…. oh well, TIME TO TAKE THE LOAD OFF!! *ba dum psh*

Does your firewall eat Referer headers? Do you even understand the question? Epi’s blog has hotlinking protection. So either your browser, proxy or firewall is probably either removing or blanking the Referer headers.

Yea, I know what you’re talking about. It happened with a few other blogs I read, so I’m used to adjusting it. Thanks anyways though =3, I’ve just been lazy with doing all this stuff, especially since I recently switched to Fios and had to do alot of preparations for it, and also clear up my hardrive (even though thats not necessary with the Fios installation, its just good to take some gbs off… especially when you only have 20 out of 250! That won’t be a problem soon since I’ll get a new one)

So yea, enough about me, what about you? *winks*

Oh yes I put in hotlinking protection because I only have so much bandwith a month. I’m at 101 now though, took long enough, I’ve been reading and commenting on this blog for 3 years now!

was directed at Chris, not you! I could care less about how many years you’ve been a Sea Slug fanboy! The spotlight will ALWAYS be on Chris! So yea *bumps Epi out of the way to stare at Chris’ gorgeous locks*!

jkjkjk =3 but yea, I can now see your pictures, and I was welcomed with the new, improved moe CC! Back to the Sea Slug fanboy topic, I think I’ll reach my first anniversary commenting here! ^_^

    …n-n-n-n-n-n-NOOOOO FLOWERS??!?!?!?!

Actually, I was expecting *fiddles his fingers* well, you know *blushingly kicks the dirt with his hands behind his back just like one of Luigi’s taunts in SSBB* *which is also one of Luigi’s meteor smash attacks if used properly* *yes, pretty cool that Luigi’s taunt is actually an attack!… but anyways*, maybe a “HAPPY ANNIVERSARY JESUS159159159″ as the Header Text! Or maybe where it says “Sea Slugs! Anime Blog” all the way at the top where you have to highlight to view it, maybe you can change that text for the occasion!

Of course, I’m just jk-ing =3, you’ve already helped me enough with the whole find-and-replace e-mail/comment thing, so thanks a million for that! Also, I just realized that the smiley face on your other blog (and also Yukan Blog now that I think about it) is also all the way at the bottom of the page!…. *makes love to it*
