Macross Frontier 14

Summary:
As expected, Alto grabs Luca’s pack and escapes the bomb. Luca is about to confess his love to Nanase, but has to scramble as the Vajra defold right in front of Frontier. As the Vajra advance in the Flying V, Sheryl finds Mikhail is unconscious and takes the controls. Unfortunately, she sucks. Then Luca tries to save Sheryl and Mikhail, but he sucks as well. Before the Vajra can take out half the main cast, however, Alto flies in to rescue everyone. Just as Leon hoped, President Glass authorizes the Reaction Warheads, and the Frontier forces battle back.

The Vajra aren’t stupid, and the main mothership (carrying Ranka) defolds behind Frontier. Ranka is linked up and shown the battle and a flashback of her mother (maybe) singing the Aimo song. Ranka’s belly starts glowing as Vajra sperm swim in her uterus (maybe). Grace remarks from afar that Ranka might be the Little Queen, and Brera rescues Ranka as Alto frags the old Queen. The Aimo song completely disrupts the Vajra forces, and Bobby takes the mothership out with a single shot. As the Vajra forces are slaughtered, Ranka cries that she won’t be able to collect child support payments now.

Reaction:
There was so much unrequited love in this episode! The part where it was revealed that Jeffrey’s wife had died long ago and now Monica is looking extra good to him was extremely uncomfortable. Then there was Bobby’s one-sided love of Ozma that even Cathy cannot deny. Luca better hurry up and tell Nanase he loves her, because he is on track to get killed. I guess he is supposed to be a communications specialist, because his combat abilities are terrible! Also, I wonder how Klan Klein is going to react to her buddy Raramia getting killed. Seek comfort in Mikhail’s arms you say?

Brera made me rage once again as he burst in and stole Alto’s credit. As I expected, Grace was still alive, and her and Leon form quite the sneaky pair (but I bet they will turn on each other). Everything is being set up to reveal that the Vajra are not evil, and it’s going to be really awkward when Alto visits Ranka’s place and finds she’s been laying eggs and taking care of furry aliens. Sheryl, don’t give up!

The Vajira fell apart once Alto-hime fragged their queen. So Ranka’s song was not having a truly dramatic effect since they were still firing. Brera-nii is the new guy to keep Alto-hime eternally in second place. Worse still it was Alto-hime who slew Ranka’s new friend while Brera just grabbed her and ran.

Ranka is going to have he love life in a mess now that Alto-hime has acquired a taste for Vajira blood. It also seems that this time there is no forgetting who it was that saved Ranka. After all hime left her pretty wuick to go frag some more bugs with the boys from NUNS.

Hopefully Pilot-hime will learn to adjust to his new armor pack since he did end up caught in the blast… :(

Now that the Pixies are short one pilot, maybe Sheryl can fill in. Sheryl has much to learn may as well be form master Klein with some tutoring for Kabuki-hime.

Forget everyone else, the pairing I’m cheering for now is Luca x Nanase. Even if he does die later on, I hope he’ll use that other voice and go into GAR mode before biting space dust. ;P

This is off-topic, but I’ve been wondering about this through several years of anime watching but I have not gotten around to asking until now.

What is the significance of the female hairstyle, particularly the two long thick strands of hair on either side of the head kept in front of the ear and worn draped down the chest? Is it a religious thing?

It was a pretty awesome episode. I just don’t know what they were trying to accomplish with the Luca subplot. Obviously they were trying to write him into the typical ‘this character will die this episode’ subplot that all war movies/anime tend to have. But then they decided that he wouldn’t die just yet…

I can’t decide if this was good writing, or bad writing.

P.S. That scene with Ranka’s mom reminded me of the Atlantians in Escaflowne.

P.P.S. Flopstall: you mean the female sideburns? It’s just a hairstyle dude :p

What?! Those are considered sideburns!?!?! *BLUSH* Sheryl is starting to convert me again!… must.. resist!

I would like to know who started the whole long-strand-side-burn thing too! Anyone know the exact hair style so I can google it? =3

Man, if Brera has to hang out with the SMS guys, that would be hilarious! I can already see Brera grabbing the last melon-pan before Alto, or Brera getting the really exciting missions before Alto, etc. etc. while Alto silently rages.

The Luca x Nanase thing seems a bit forced, as if everyone has to be paired up officially. I laughed when Luca was trying to talk to Nanase but lost his train of thought when he glimpsed a cleavage shot.

As for the hair, I think that just happens when you brush most of it back, but the hair from your side of your head hangs straight down instead of staying back. I’ve never had long hair, though, so I can’t be sure. As for draping down to the chest, this is often used for not-quite-safe for work fanservice.

I don’t think the female hairstyle is just fanservice. There are so many qualities (possibly including the female hairstyle) of anime that have their roots in Japanese culture - a culture heavily influenced by its major religions.

I for one would like to hear Brera’s explanation as to why, if he’s going to work with NUNS now (and presumably also with SMS) he spent all this time previously trying to kill Alto.

I am cheering for Sherly. She is good under pressure and doesnt break down.

Luca, I dont want you to die but looks like the Grim Reaper is behind you with his hour glass turned upside down.

Like Crusader said, I wonder how Ranka is going to be with Vajra blood tainted Alto. She cried for him to stop before he killed the queen.

I dont know what sub you guys watched but I didnt know it made a ref to Captain Wilder being married before. all it said was that he was lonely or something.

And Brera stealing the spotlight. I guess its a sibling thing since Ranka did the same crap to poor Sherly. Brera and Ranka better play nice and share equal spotlight.

I kinda hope Ranka ends up with Alto, though it seems very unlikely at this point.

Arg, I knew since the first episode Sheryl was gonna end up with Alto… one of the Macross universe rules are that the guys always choose the older girl, ALWAYS.

Now in all seriousness, the development so far hints so much at Alto x Sheryl that this series romantic side was no fun to watch (I love the battles and valkyrie more than the love triangle). I don’t care who he ends up with, but I hope the script writers can confuse me for the next 7 episodes so I can’t tell what will it be anymore.
