When the 33rd Marine Fleet witnesses Sheryl collapse from exhaustion, BlueHair tells his faction that they have been tricked about the promised concert. This starts up a fight between Major Ogotai’s loyal soldiers and BlueHair’s human-hating fighters. Sheryl, Alto, and Grace are taken as hostages, BlueHair’s forces have all the Queadlunn units, and Major Ogotali is reluctant to use the Mother Ship’s guns to fire on the rebels.
Fortunately, Luca lets Ranka and Mikhail field-test an L.A.I. engine that is not affected by fold dislocation (trimming the trip down from 7 days to just a few hours). All of the rebel forces are entranced by Ranka’s singing and Mikhail’s VF-25 with blinking speakers, and once more culture saves the day. BlueHair tries to kill Ranka, but he makes the mistake of reminding Alto of acting. Completely pissed off, Alto shoots BlueHair in the nuts, and then uses the knife to give BlueHair a vasectomy. Mikhail sets up a date ride for Alto to take Ranka back for her “debut” concert, but their scenic flight through phallic clouds is interrupted by some mysterious events that lead the duo to an old Macross ship.
Reaction:
Damn, if the Zentradi were nose-bleeding from Ranka and a karaoke set, imagine what would happen if Klan Klein ever got a band and put on a full concert with Sheryl-esque costumes? Ranka’s concert was really good (in spite of the sparse props), and it really spiced up the love triangle. I am still a Sheryl fan, but I think stiffer competition will bring out her A-game. I also can’t help but wonder if Grace purposely got Sheryl sick…
It was about time that Ranka finally got a chance to shine. I especially liked the one Zentradi soldier who was so afraid he would be unable to attend Ranka’s first concert. But what does this mean for the fans on Macross Frontier who are now going to get Ranka’s not-quite-first live? Does it not count as a full concert if you only perform 2 songs? I also wonder about both the Macross ship and also the movie-esque eye in the water.
