Macross Frontier 12

Summary:
When the 33rd Marine Fleet witnesses Sheryl collapse from exhaustion, BlueHair tells his faction that they have been tricked about the promised concert. This starts up a fight between Major Ogotai’s loyal soldiers and BlueHair’s human-hating fighters. Sheryl, Alto, and Grace are taken as hostages, BlueHair’s forces have all the Queadlunn units, and Major Ogotali is reluctant to use the Mother Ship’s guns to fire on the rebels.

Fortunately, Luca lets Ranka and Mikhail field-test an L.A.I. engine that is not affected by fold dislocation (trimming the trip down from 7 days to just a few hours). All of the rebel forces are entranced by Ranka’s singing and Mikhail’s VF-25 with blinking speakers, and once more culture saves the day. BlueHair tries to kill Ranka, but he makes the mistake of reminding Alto of acting. Completely pissed off, Alto shoots BlueHair in the nuts, and then uses the knife to give BlueHair a vasectomy. Mikhail sets up a date ride for Alto to take Ranka back for her “debut” concert, but their scenic flight through phallic clouds is interrupted by some mysterious events that lead the duo to an old Macross ship.

Reaction:
Damn, if the Zentradi were nose-bleeding from Ranka and a karaoke set, imagine what would happen if Klan Klein ever got a band and put on a full concert with Sheryl-esque costumes? Ranka’s concert was really good (in spite of the sparse props), and it really spiced up the love triangle. I am still a Sheryl fan, but I think stiffer competition will bring out her A-game. I also can’t help but wonder if Grace purposely got Sheryl sick…

It was about time that Ranka finally got a chance to shine. I especially liked the one Zentradi soldier who was so afraid he would be unable to attend Ranka’s first concert. But what does this mean for the fans on Macross Frontier who are now going to get Ranka’s not-quite-first live? Does it not count as a full concert if you only perform 2 songs? I also wonder about both the Macross ship and also the movie-esque eye in the water.

Seeing that her actual first live was at Formo several episodes back, it doesn’t really change much. As I see it the concert would really be Ranka’s first live……with paying customers that is.

I guess you could consider this a promo-concert then.

Bah it was a private concert for Alto-hime, those Zentrans were just party crashers and invited guests. In any case it was an awesome concert.

I am sure Sheryl will bounce, back. It was not necessarily a Ranka victory, but an Allied victory since Ranka had support from Mikhail, Luca, and Nanase.

Yeah I don’t understand why no one in the series is a Sheryl fan. Ranka has all the luck and friends!

I liked how Alto jumped over the crowd in his VF-25 so he could have a front-row seat. It’s really hard to see over those Zentradi!

    SHERYL FAN?!

Fine … so be it …

“Yeah I don’t understand why no one in the series is a Sheryl fan.”

Do you mean of the characters with speaking parts? Cause Sheryl has plenty of fans. I’d say that Luca is pretty ambivalent, and Michael just wants Sheryl to himself.

The bigger question is, why is no one out there (on the internets) except you and me Kabitzin a Sheryl fan?

Crusader is totally a Sheryl fan. I’m willing to bet that he’s just using the guise of neutrality to ensure that his somewhat scary blogging peers don’t notice the switch. ;)

I wouldn’t call myself a fan but if I was in Alto’s shoes, I’d prefer Sheryl NOM NOM NOM over Ranka. Though I wouldn’t throw Ranka of a cliff either. That said, I don’t really care about pairing games and who ends up with whom. Dakimakura huggers always root for the cute, innocent girl. That’s just how they are.

I’m on the fence for this one. Although I’ve got to say that I love Megumi Nakajima’s voice to death and that Ranka’s impromptu concert was just awesome (maybe because I love Seikan Hikou). =D

That new Sheryl banner you have is BITCHIN! =3 (I am a Ranka fan though… so:  )

Edit: LMAO @ that Klan Klein banner also! I see you are a lolicon like the rest of us! Or perhaps she was too “big” in her normal mode?

Pretty much why this episode left me feeling bleh. It was like, after twelve episodes of Sheryl being the awesome, assertive/aggressive love interest and all around better choice this episode basically had the entire plot push Ranka to the front. I don’t like the lack of build up.

Which is why I loled heartily when the Zentradi guys were like

    “Who’s that?”

“You don’t know? That’s that poacher, the Superdimensional Cinderella!”

This episode is Ranka’s ‘first live’ in the series. To me, atleast. I don’t think we’ll get to see another one since it’ll be overplayed.

blissmo: To be honest, Alto is so into flying that I’m not sure I care who he ends up with. I just like Sheryl’s character better.

Epi: Sheryl has fans, but I get the feeling like a lot of those fans would just hop on the next big thing. We have yet to meet any of her truly devoted, stalker fans.

    jacobian: Haha, Crusader neutral?

Chris: Galaxy Fairy says Nom Nom Nom! But what about figurine lovers?

Ez: I like Sheryl better, but I prefer Ranka’s songs in general.

Jesus159159159: I am totally not a lolicon, but loli-Klan Klein does fit a lot better.

Onion: Yeah it was funny how the advisor guy had to tell the n00b captain about hot new musical acts. All the troops knew who Ranka was, too. That Hydra that ate Mao’s original actress was the best thing that ever happened to Ranka, and she owes it all to Leon.

sabil8: I’d love to see the live; hopefully they will have some new songs, too! I’m still hopeful…

I also can’t help but wonder if Grace purposely got Sheryl sick…

I’d put money on it. That Alto-looking Zentradi guy was talking to someone who seemed to know the instant Alto escaped, which could only be who? The woman in the room with the radio in her head, I’m thinking. Not to mention Cpt. Global whatever-his-name-is seemed to have a sneaking suspicion that the whole ambush was an inside job, aka Grace and Leon.

Ranka and Michel’s entrance smacked of Macross 7, but they executed a successful Minmay Defense first try, so they’re excused. Nice new Minmay song version at the end too.

Only at Ranka’s performance can you see fans dying from cuteness overload. I know I did.
