As much as Black Star loves stealing the spotlight, Tsubaki becomes the center of attention in this episode as she requests from Shinigami-sama to go after the Fey Blade known as Masamune, which takes her and Black Star into the town of Hari, home of the porcupine buildings. At first, Tsubaki feels a bit terrible on her part for dragging Black Star into the situation without properly explaining why she wants to go after the Fey Blade, but Black Star shrugs it off, saying that both master and weapon give and take from each other. However, the townspeople of Hari were not as forgiving as they drive the two out of town after seeing Black Star’s shoulder star tattoo. Apparently, the Star clan had plundered the town back in the day for money, and the villagers had not forgotten.
While Black Star and Tsubaki hid in the forest and tried to sense the Fey Blade, Black Star told a brief story about how the Star clan was notorious for assassinations and consuming human souls for power before Shibusen stepped in and essentially wiped out the clan. Fortunately for Black Star, he was still a baby at the time, so Shibusen decided to take him in as a student and raise him. Meanwhile, back in Hari, the Fey Blade makes his way in and manages to overtake a boy’s body as a master. Black Star and Tsubaki rush back into Hari and face off against the Fey Blade and his shadow minion. After a rough start, Black Star manages to get the Fey Blade caught up in the air so he could disarm the Fey Blade from the boy, and Tsubaki catches the Blade and sends her soul into the Fey Blade’s realm, where we learn that the Fey Blade is actually Tsubaki’s brother. Although she has trouble initially pushing her feelings aside for her brother, Tsubaki hulks up and defeats her brother, allowing her and Black Star to capture their first soul as well as give Tsubaki a new Fey Blade mode.
As annoying as Black Star has been, I have to give him some points for sticking by Tsubaki while taking multiple stick shots to the head. Tsubaki also gets some more kudos points for showing her grit and determination against her brother, showing that she’s not just another pretty face.
