Soul Eater 09

Soul Eater is still recovering at the hospital where he dreams of popping out of Maka’s stomach to escape the dark abyss that he floating in. Fortunately before things got weirder, Maka shakes him out of his dream. Still sort of feeling at fault for Soul Eater’s injuries, Maka tries to be overly helpful in pampering Soul Eater, but Soul Eater didn’t want Maka to burden herself that much. At the end of the day, both sides sort of felt down since each felt solely at fault for the incident at Italy. Maka’s dad tries to comfort Maka with some father/daughter time, but he struggled mightily in trying to keep a conversation going. Maka does ask some questions to her father about the Demon God and sword, which gives Maka’s dad something to talk about and gives viewers a quick background about how the Demon God came into play through human soul consumption. Maka’s dad also seems to hint indirectly that Soul Eater may have the potential to become a Demom God or weapon since he was infected by Ragnarok’s blood. Perhaps Soul Eater’s dream of popping out of Maka is foreshadowing this transformation since Ragnarok was assimilated into Chrona and interacted with her in a similar manner.

Meanwhile, Sid sends Black Star to clean up the Shibusen library, which of course Black Star fails to do as he amused himself with Charisma Justice comics while sitting upon a pile of books. Death the Kid comes into the library looking for a book and decides to take the book that Black Star was sitting on. The book turns out to tell the story about Excalibur the sword, proclaiming to be the most powerful weapon. Although they get a warning from Stein who said he wasn’t even able to recover the sword, Black Star and Kid decide to go on their own little adventure to find it, which takes them over a giant waterfall and through an underground river. The two eventually do find Excalibur, and after both manage to draw him out of the ground quite easily, Excalibur reveals his true form…a sort of midget albino anteater. From here, the two learn why no one has been able to wield Excalibur as he just keeps on rambling and rambling about random things that are never related with each other and poked anyone who interrupted his ramblings with his white cane. Added to the fact that Excalibur has about 1000 pages of demands for wielding him, Black Star and Kid eventually had enough of his ramblings and leave him. However, Excalibur doesn’t give up easily as he sends both of them giant wreathes with a message proclaiming that he will be waiting for them.

After an action packed last episode, this one tunes it down a bit and injects quite a bit of humor back into the series. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdness of Excalibur and the various face cringes that everyone does when talking about him :P Hopefully Excalibur will show Black Star that he needs to tone it down a bit when it comes to communicating with others. Kid’s awesome hoverboard makes a quick appearance, but just like the Back to the Future version, you can’t use it on water! The fairy that Kidd and Black Star run into seemed sort of randomly place, but maybe she’ll be come more important in later episodes.

Yeah I didn’t really mention that although Excalibur was random and demanding, the way he babbles and interacts with BS and Kidd was pretty awesome and hilarious ;P

It’s interesting that people will murder others or give up their souls for ultimate power, but no one will read the instruction manual or go to meetings to obtain ultimate power…

Also, I have yet to see Excalibur or the pixie show up again in the manga, but they are featured fairly prominently in the OP…

This episode was great but not as good as the last too. BTW Krona is a guy if you can believe it or not. You can tell because he uses the male form of I(Boku) among other small things.
