Summary:
Ranka’s working hard to make it on her own, and her scrubby agent gets her a sucky job hawking Rainbow Carrots at the Zentradi Mall. Ranka scores an appearance on a small variety show and even gets into the entertainment program at Alto’s elite Mihoshi Academy. Things are looking pretty good, until Sheryl shows up at the school and grabs all the attention. In other bad news, Leon chats with someone (Brera?) about the Dulfim crew members having Type-V syndrome and the importance of spying on Ranka.
Sheryl eagerly enslaves Alto by pretending to be upset about the earring that Alto lost in battle. She wants to try out the EX-Gear, and so they give her a few lessons. Unfortunately, a strange green creature escapes with her pantsu during a shower break, and Sheryl gives chase in the EX-Gear without locking herself in. Naturally Alto catches her before she can splatter, and the beautiful view inspires Sheryl to forgive Alto and also to enroll in the piloting program at Mihoshi Academy. Meanwhile, Ranka learns the variety show was preempted by Sheryl’s interview (right after Ranka refused Sheryl’s offer for some screentime), and is forced to sing Aimo for the little green creature. As she sings, Brera steps out and accompanies her song on his harmonica…
Reaction:
The absolute best moment in this episode was when Ranka popped out and scared the crap out of that girl standing next to the carrots. It was just so random and unexpected, but I wouldn’t have bought any of those nasty looking carrots either. Ranka’s being stupid and prideful about Sheryl’s offer. Connections make the world go round, and it’s not like getting a chance from Sheryl means Ranka doesn’t have to work hard. That scrubby manager should be taking advantage of the Sheryl connection, but perhaps the adversity will make Ranka stronger.
This episode was kinda dumb and fugly, but we did get a few bits of plot. All that sneakiness from Leon was welcome, especially since Catherine is totally sweating her ex. She better hurry up and make a move before Ozma gets taken down by some beetles. Speaking of love, this episode seemed to hint that Luca likes Nanase, but Nanase likes Ranka. I was not surprised to learn that Luca also named his EX-Gear (Samson).

Well now that all the kids are in the same school I hop[e that Ranka has the wit to force Alto-hime into helping her ut in theater class seeing as how Alto-hime was there before taking the pilot course. Of course Ranka can take piloting as an elective…
If Ranka started using Sheryl now she couldn’t challenge her for the hand of Kabuki-hime on a level field. Besides I don’t think Ranka wants to allow Sheryl to claim she made her…even if Sheryl genuinely wants to help out.
Hmm … I really liked this episode
you got your love comedy in my macross!
you got your macross in my love comedy!
Unlike Reese’s, I don’t think it’s working here.
But on the Sheryl-Ranka thing, I think Sheryl seems genuinely impressed that Ranka wants to do it on her own terms; after all, that’s how she did it.
It definitely makes sense to have all the younger characters attend the same school, and I don’t have a problem with school romance/comedy in Macross per se. What I take issue with is the very lame gags. Green animal grabbing pantsu? Egg splatters in the face? At least the production team put in some shoddy animation to complete the comedy effect.
I am ok with the romantic parts so far. I like that I am not sure who is going to end up with who, and it’s hard to pick a favorite to cheer for.
