Galaxy ships Kaitos and Dulfim defold, but have a hard time pushing through the fold distortions to escape the Vajra. While Sheryl gives a hell of a concert, SMS goes all out with the VF-25 units handling the new yellow stag beetle Vajra while Kanaria brings the heat in her König Monster. Unfortunately, just as SMS is doing well, a giant Vajra mothership defolds (to Leon’s delight) and destroys Pietro before sinking Kaitos with a single shot. Luca tries to investigate the mothership’s fold reactor, but is caught by some tentacles.
Of course Alto rushes in to rescue Luca, but he is also trailed by a stealthy magenta unit (Sterne Brera). Alto’s VF-25 is blown up by guards, but Alto uses the plug-and-play ability of his EX-Gear to take control of Johnanne and get Luca out. The music of Sheryl and Ranka is transmitted through Sheryl’s earring, and it gives Alto the extra energy he needs to get out safely. With Luca and Alto out, the Macross Quarter (which has transformed into mech form) opens the jaws of the mothership and fires the Macross cannon straight into the mothership’s uvula, for a one-hit kill.
Reaction:
I am thrilled that the animation team is just saving money for awesome episodes like this one, although the next episode on Frontier will probably be kinda ugly. The mix of Sheryl’s songs and ferocious beetle battling was great, although there was some odd sexual tension. First there was Jeffrey leering at Catherine when she is grabbed by the straps, and then there was Brera shooting the rifle out of Johanne’s hand so that he could watch more tentacle action (reminiscent of The Tower of Druaga). Bobby also made a snide remark insinuating that Catherine was pregnant after she puked from the crazy ride in the Quarter (apparently the Quarter is so awesome it can impregnate you after just one ride).
Brera was an intriguing addition, since he knows the Aimo song that Ranka sang for Alto. The purple crystal in Sheryl’s earring was also seen in that Bel Peol wannabe Richard Bilrer’s ring. This crystal stuff must resonate with Ranka’s ability (her belly glowed before the song was transmitted) somehow. Hopefully Alto grabbed Sheryl’s other earring before his VF-25 got blown up, or she is going to be pissed. We’ll also see how the Vajra do against Monica’s data-mining prowess, as she was able to code an evasion program from only a few minutes of fire.
