Kabitzin’s April 2008 List

I’m going to leave off the shows that ended recently since you already know which ones I liked (rankings tend to be consistent throughout the season). So far this season has mostly been silly, but Macross is keeping me grounded… sorta. I’ve had a hard time deciding which shows to pick up, but I’m leaning towards some foxy gender-bending. I am still eagerly awaiting literary conflict as well.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Code Geass R2: If you liked the first season, the sequel has been giving you almost everything you wanted. C.C. torturing Kallen and Rollo doing his Dio Brando-lite impression are interesting additions, and I giggle whenever they bring up the Viletta x Ogi relationship. Also, shouldn’t Lelouch’s Geass not work on people who wear contacts (at its current power level)? Near-sightedness banzai!
  2. Macross Frontier: Although the story is exciting and epic, Macross takes extra care to sprinkle in little bits of fanservice whenever possible. So far the music and animation have been incredible, and I am enjoying the series in spite of being a Macross newbie.
  3. Soul Eater: This is a shounen series with style. The studio has really done a great job with this series, and I hope they can keep up the fight animation and the pacing. I think Death the Kid is a fun character, but the way he holds his weapons really bothers me. It really is amazing what you can get away with when your dad is Shinigami-sama.
  4. Wagaya no Oinari-sama: The two images that sealed it for me were Ko going all stealthy on the baggage shelf and Kugen in fox form watching TV. I figure the budget will slide with time, but I like what I’ve seen so far. Kugen’s minty-fresh breath amuses me.
  5. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki: This is how I imagine the world would turn out if Haruhi were really in charge. Kyouka stealing credit for Yuka was awesome, since Kyouka didn’t even care about winning the game.

Rising:

  • Kamen no Maid Guy: I am aware that this show is remarkably stupid, but the setups for the fanservice have been interesting so far. Kogarashi’s printing ability reminds me of how Sheryl warned Alto not to upload spicy visual data.
  • Golgo 13: Even though everyone is all retro-fugly, this show is so hilarious. Golgo himself is out-of-control powerful, and his exploits completely blow my mind. Even after getting it on for hours, Golgo doesn’t spoon or smoke; no, Golgo winds down by grabbing a sidearm and headshotting a gang of contract killers. Golgo’s real name is aimbot.
  • xxxHolic manga: I can’t stand the overly long limbs in the anime, so I decided to check the manga out to see what all the fuss was about. While I can see the interesting foundation being put in place, so much of the early chapters are Kimihiro being annoying (along with the two brats) and Yuko giving long speeches. Still I like Yuko, and I enjoy watching all the random unimportant people who keep getting owned by life.

Falling:

  • Nabari no Ou: I wouldn’t say the show has been bad, but something about it has kinda left me feeling bored. I did enjoy watching the big cat bat away Yoite, though.
  • The Tower of Druaga: I didn’t think the joke episode was that funny, so naturally the real episodes didn’t amuse me either. Feels cliche and boring, as expected.

Haha nice list. Nabari no Ou is getting pretty boring and I thought the first episode of the tower of druaga was hilarious. but i havent seen ep2 or anything after that yet. i got bored of wagaya no oinari-sama, soul eater and code geass are a must, have yet to watch the 2nd ep of kyouran kazoki nikki and macross is worth sticking with.

Also, shouldn’t Lelouch’s Geass not work on people who wear contacts (at its current power level)?

That’s because not everyone has special C.C.-supplied contacts: did she go to SpecSavers!?

The only show I’m watching that is in your list is Soul Eater..
I’m not a fan of shounen anime, but this one seems decent..

Also, no Vampire Knight up there?
It’s my favorite anime this season thus far..

There is some subversion in episode 3, but I guess it is pretty much what you usually see in anime of this time. But it’s not boring to me, and that’s what matters. :P

    Golgo 13?!

I just thought it was unintentionally funny.

blissmo: I’m still a little wary of Wagaya no Oinari-sama, so I might take a wait-and-see approach and then just marathon to catch up.

Zyl: Don’t be fooled!!! They are the same contacts, just repackaged and marked up!!!

Setsukyie: I have to admit I don’t usually go for shoujo, but maybe I will give the series a chance if I hear more good things. Vampires aren’t usually my cup of tea either.

TheBigN: If it was anyone besides Gonzo, I would think that maybe it could be an ok series, but I have been burned so hard by them the last few seasons that I’m a bit skittish.

Runningkid: Yeah, I would say that it is much better if you go in with a sense of humor about how crazy the Duke is.

I’ve been meaning to watch Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. I don’t know, its just those Sonic the Hedgehog-like smirks/grins that sort of turn me on =3! I’m enjoying Allison to Lillia. Its not for everyone, but I gotta have my Ghibli-ish fix *smokes a Totoro*

Ranka Lee, My Dear, I Don’t Give A Damn

GIVE ME THAT PUN-MANUAL!!!… or take me as your apprentice! *blush*
Kabi-kun: *combs hair to the side* You’re Fired!

Well, I’ll comment on Wagaya. I like how there is the special vocal effect when he/she is in fox form.

    Kabi-kun: I AM BOSS!!!

Now the Secret of BOSS has been revealed!!

Frankly I’m having a bit of a nightmare with WP 2.5.1 - at first there was an error establishing connection with the database, then the upgrade notification in Hontou ni Taihen desu just won’t go away even though I’ve done it twice over already! :(

I’m really not sure about the whole Kyouran Kazoku Nikki thing. When it’s being really random, it’s fun, but Kyouka can be a bit much. That sort of character is nothing new, but I’ve really only enjoyed that kind of character once (you already invoked her name), and of course a lot of people don’t even care for her.

It threw me for a loop that episode 2 was so sweet, so maybe the show has got some surprises.

One that didn’t make your list I’m really liking so far is Kure-nai. It’s a totally bizarre juxtaposition of sweet cuteness and ultraviolence.

Kudos for the very much underappreciated Kyouran Kazoku Nikki ^_^
