After getting owned up by some giants called Zentradi, mankind fled on various colony ships across the universe. The story takes place in 2059 AD on the 25th Emigration Fleet (Macross Frontier), and we see Lee Ranka hearing from her brother Ozma that he’s gotten her a ticket to Nome Sheryl’s concert. Backstage, we briefly meet shota Angelloni Luca, wannabe-pilot Saotome Alto, and the smooth Buran Mikhail. These 3 are part of the winged-spandex opening act that the students will be putting on during Sheryl’s concert. Mikhail teases “Alto-hime” about his kabuki background and feminine features, but Alto longs to fly higher than his spandex will let him.
When Ranka gets off from her part-time job at Nyan-Nyan (a Chinese restaurant), she quickly gets lost, and ends up meeting Alto. The show is pretty awesome, thanks to Alto’s quick thinking, but unfortunately the show has to be ended prematurely on account of alien beetles invading Macross Frontier. Special SMS team’s Skull Squadron intercepts, and Ozma orders Henry Gilliam to protect the city. When the VF-25 jet-mecha has little success against the alien beetle, however, Gilliam ejects and is quickly juiced, leaving Alto to jump in the abandoned VF-25 and distract the alien beetle away from the helpless Ranka.
Reaction:
First off, the production values for this show are amazing. It’s better than many movies, and even the CG looks outstanding. The chase scenes were very well done, and the director gets the mood just right during the action sequences. I was amazed how in the future, people use rocket packs to dry their clothes. I also liked the Nyan-Nyan jingle that we got in the eye-catch.
I have to say that Gilliam was willing to abandon his VF-25 a little too early. I know it was in the name of plot development, but surely the advanced machine can do something even if the arms are restrained! With the power of opposable thumbs, Gilliam should have been able to turn the rifle around to shoot the beetle off his back, right? There’s no way mankind can lose to a species without opposable thumbs!
