Soul Eater 01

Maka is a young upcoming Meister at the Shinigami Weapon Meister University (SWMU). She and her trusty cool sidekick Soul Eater, a human who morphs into Maka’s scythe and is constantly drooling for some souls to consume, are working towards collecting and consuming 99 human souls and a witch soul so that Soul Eater can “upgrade” himself to become a Death Scythe of Shinigami-sama, the head of SWMU. Right after taking down Jack the Ripper for their 99th soul, Maka and Soul Eater figured they were in good shape despite hearing about the challenges of taking a witch’s soul. However, taking the soul of “witch” Blair proved to be a challenge as she uses her seemingly overpowering pumpkin skills and her charming looks to distract Soul Eater to get the best of Maka. Amused with Soul Eater’s ability to change into a scythe, Blair asks Soul Eater to join her rather than Maka, who was getting fed up with Soul Eater ogling over Blair. With a nice bit of trickery, Maka and Soul Eater eventually do get Blair’s soul, only to discover that she’s actually a cat with magical powers. And their reward for not successfully capturing a witch’s soul for their 100th soul was the confiscation of their first 99 human souls, leaving Maka and Soul Eater to start over again from square one.

I haven’t read the manga before to know what to expect, but so far, Soul Eater has a bit of everything: action, humor, and a bit of conflict. Maka and Soul Eater are perfect contrasts of each other (Maka being a bit more serious and analytical while the self-proclaimed king of “cool” Soul Eater is a bit more laid back), so it makes for some funny moments watching them argue while trying to deal with Blair in this episode. Also, Shinigami-sama might be a ridiculous-looking leader of SMWU, but you gotta respect him and his Shinigami-chop. We also learn a bit about Maka’s dad, who already achieved the rank of Death Scythe but whom Maka has little respect and love for since she always finds him hanging out with other woman and not with her mother, so it’ll be interesting to see how that relationship progresses.

Regarding the fansubs, what’s with the “cut” and “uncut” versions?

The special night version has a longer preview and apparently that is the only difference.

Cut version will also supposedly have heavier censoring, it didn’t affect anything in episode one though.

The preview in the “Night” version was done by Shinigami-sama instead of Maka and Soul, and it really talked up how awesomely naughty it was going to be, but there was zero difference in the actual content.

However, I didn’t see a really decent sub come out until the night version, just some speed demons with bad proofing and confusing grammar, so I think I’m going to be waiting every week.

Shinigami Chop is the special power of the year.

Considering that this was one of the more fanservice-filled parts of the manga, I can’t really see the uncut version being that different.
