Spice and Wolf 09

Summary:
The shepherd girl introduces herself as Nora Allent, and because the Church took her in she watches the sheep for a local priest. It’s not that great a job, but even though Nora would rather be a tailor she feels an sense of obligation to the Church. Nora is very skillful in handling her dog Enik, and Lawrence is eager to see if a shepherd can be an effective guide through wolf country. Nora also mentions she can serve as a guide through the creepy forests that enclose a shortcut to Ramtra.

When Lawrence gets to Rubenheigen, things seem a little strange in the lively city. Everyone snickers at their cargo of 20 armor sets, and the inspection agent commends Lawrence for his decision to pay the tax in goods instead of money. Also, it seems some shady horse rider guy has been searching for a merchant named Lawrence…

Reaction:
Well, the banter was livelier and the pace was not quite as slow this time, but I was very confused about what was going on. This was clearly a setup episode, and I have a feeling that choosing a large payment in armor was not a good idea. How is it that Lawrence is supposed to be a good merchant if he doesn’t realize the value in diversifying his goods?

I liked the trash that was talked in this episode. I especially enjoyed when Horo commented that she would still be able to eat Nora’s sheep. When you think about it, a shepherd escort makes sense because a shepherd would know how to avoid wolves and also the sheep would make excellent chaff for distracting wolves. Then again, it could just be that Lawrence enjoys being surrounded by cute girls while traveling.

I hope they would quicken the plot a little, it’s really very slow now…
