I’m actually kind of surprised that no one in the anime blogosphere has mentioned Audiosurf, an uber-cool game that takes media player visualizations to the next level.
For those who haven’t heard of it, Audiosurf is an independent-developer game that combines rhythm sensibilities (reminiscent of Amplitude/Frequency) with puzzle game mechanics (Kirby’s Avalanche, Puzzle Fighter) and racers with unique abilities into a slick package. However, the key feature that distinguishes it from the rest of the crowd is that the dynamic generation of the racetrack trajectory (energetic sections are steeper, slower sections tend to be uphill, I don’t quite know what causes the corkscrews…), block color patterns, and block placement based on the beats and notes of a song that you provide out of your mp3/wma/etc collection. You can also see who else in the online rankings has played that particular song before, and compare your scores with theirs. It’s also only $10, which is ridiculously cheap.

There’s quite a few Audiosurf Youtube videos out there, but not many anime-inspired tracks. Most of the players seem to use the Mono type racer, which is the most boring one, as it converts all blocks to the same color, and then turns most of the notes into bricks that you have to dodge. This eliminates the core puzzle mechanic, and also detracts from the rhythm, since you end up dodging most of the notes. Out of the anime videos that do exist, here are a few that I found interesting:
Gundam 00’s OP2 -Ash Like Snow: I picked this one because it’s a recent song, and the player uses the interesting Pusher type racer (can shove incoming blocks into an adjacent channel). The path is mostly a straightforward descent, though there is a twist somewhere in the middle.
Nodame Cantabile OP1 - Allegro Cantabile: Not only do I love this song, but the player uses the Pointman style racer to pick up and drop powerups in a timely manner to score some big points.
CaramellDansen - Speedycake mix: Just because it’s annoyingly catchy. It’s also *ridiculously* fast; this player was quite good, but couldn’t avoid all the bricks at the end, and lost the potential 30% bonus for perfect dodging.
It’s always interesting to see what kind of tracks your songs will generate; I find that a lot of anime OPs tend to be strictly fast paced affairs, so the entire path is just a steep roller coaster straight down, but I did find some songs that made for interesting tracks (ha!):
Gunslinger Girl OP - The Light Before We Land: Has some surprisingly quick sections that caught me off guard, since I was expecting this one to be a leisurely walk in the park.
Utawarerumono ED - Madoromi no Rinne: Seriously bumpy ride, with low forward visibility due to the plethora of slope changes.
Gunbuster 2 OP - Groovin’ Magic: Hills and valleys, hills and valleys….
Mai Hime - Mezane: BGM’s, especially Yuki Kajiura battle themes, tend to work very well because of their strong beats and ultra-dramatic phrases. Mezane’s tense buildup to the techno is totally awesome, like the slow ride up a huge rollercoaster. BGM-fanatic Stripey should give this a try with his vast collection! However, Slice of Life-maniacs like Jeff may find those ARIA BGMs to be a little too leisurely paced in terms of gameplay.
Audiosurf definitely revived my interest in the ol’ anime mp3 archives, if only to see what Do You Remember Love looks like in Audiosurf form. It’s a hypnotic game that can be casually played on the easiest difficulties just to enjoy the visualizations and music, or min-maxed endlessly for the ultra-competitive rhythm gamers. I’d be interested in seeing what anime songs you all think would make for unusual racetracks and patterns!
Addendum: My player name is Kiratomato (and Kabitzin plays as… Kabitzin); unfortunately I think the friend-list functionality is gimped atm, but I hope to see some of you out there on the Audiosurf high-scores boards!

This looks pretty neat! Did you see the video of Through the Fire and Flames + Audiosurf?
Yep, I looked at the youtube video and it looks so fun. However, with my dumb and poor reflexes, I can’t play this at all. Sigh.
The Touhou covers I have in mind (dBu Music and IOSYS mostly with a bit of TAMUSIC and WAVE), some recent anime soundtracks like Bamboo Blade/Kaiji, and my post-rock collection in general should make this an entertaining affair. Pirat- I mean, downloading it as I write this. Thanks for the brilliant time-waster suggestion!
Also, isn’t it dumb, poor Impz? ;_;
*checks out Through the Fire and Flames* O_O! DUDE!!! Thats like, Pac-Man on CRACK!!! Theres like, dots and ghost everywhere!!!
Is there a “put your own music” thing for DDR? I wouldn’t mind groovin to that (even though my skills are below average…)
Speaking of Kirby, I feel like trying the new Brawl version of Kirby’s Gourmet Race (oh, and a Konata version if anyones interested ^_^)
Looks pretty cool, and it’s interesting how it was made for this - unlike how people have to hack Guitar Hero to get custom songs on there. Also reminds me of Rez.
In response to Jesus159’s question, there was a DDR-style game called Dance Factory for PS2 that auto-generated patterns based on songs you provide, but supposedly the beat detection algorithms were really, really bad.
I’m surprised as well at the lack of people talking about this game!
I’ve been playing through some of DJ Bouche’s mixes of the songs from Haruhi and the songs I bought that are in Rock Band~
@ Ender: (*sniff* someone else who abbreviates my name
) Thanks for the tip man, but even if that game was good, I wouldn’t be able to play it because of my Nintendo Fanboyism (lol, yes, I’m really complicated) I went to check for results myself, and found this (if anyones interested)
I always thought this was an illegal version of DDR, but now that I know its free and legit, I can’t wait to play it! Hope I can use a Gamecube/USB converter thingy with my Gamecube Pad (from that DDR Mario Game…its for beginner noobs like me… and who wouldn’t want to see Mario shake what his mama gave him!) =3

@Kabitzin: Saw that earlier and at 4:20 or so, the track gets hella speedy.
Audiosurf Rick Roll’d
Just look at the track vs the beat of the music, you can just picture Astley dancing.
Someone used a Joy Division song for this game? That would seem to run counter to having a good time haha. Or at the very least, counter to getting a challenging course. Unless maybe it’s ‘Shadowplay’. I’m surprised ‘The Eternal’ generated any hills or turns at all. :-p
Looks fun though. I’l give it a try despite having to re-install Steam. Sigh.
I’ve tried a few songs so far, and Mono is only fun for a few runs. The puzzle type is really difficult though on fast songs! I enjoyed playing the True Tears OP (Reflectia) and the Dragonaut ED2 (Fight or Flight).
Also, that CaramellDansen song is annoying as hell.
Been playing this all morning, phew.
Wish from the Kaiji OST and Over from the CLANNAD Image Vocal Album Sorarado are pretty great in terms of song/gameplay balance, and Utada Hikaru’s Fly Me To The Moon is a good choice, too.
Reflectia’s pretty decent, I should play that more. Was kinda surprised that it accepted FLAC, though.
Which racer type is your favorite? I personally like Eraser the most, since you can easily get the huge white/black block bonuses by just erasing every color underneath them. It’s totally worth it too, since 1000 points is equivalent to a mega red combo.
Ultimately though, for the highest possible score I think that Pusher has the most potential. It requires some pretty insane reflexes to take full advantage of it, however.
Hmm, I noticed Jesus159 has the top Elite level score on Utada Hikaru’s Fly Me To The Moon. This must be rectified quickly!
LMAO!!! Oh man! I think i did horribly on that one! It should be a piece of cake to beat that score! (oh, and i only play the highest mono level, since I’m too much of a wimp to play with the multicolors!) I don’t even know why I play those Elite levels. Pretty much all the songs I played in elite have a horrible score (i think I have the lowest score for Groovin Magic also!) (Round Table ftw btw)
I will try (to embarrass myself) in the Pusher level. I BET I CAN TOTALLY OWN UR SCORE (on opposite day)
(oh, and for any Capsule fans out there, THEIR SONGS ARE HARD!!! I’ve tried Super Scooter Happy and oh man, I think I like, exploded a vein in my arm….good thing I’m ambidextrous!)

I like the Eraser as well, though I haven’t tried out too many. I did see Owen several spots below me for Reflectia =D. It’s so lonely at the top.
Unfortunately, the boring Mono has one strong advantage in that you can compound your bonuses at the end, because it is so easy to get both clean finish and stealth bonus multipliers.
In other news…..my audiosurfer Kiratomato has topped the Pro-level Ash Like Snow and Daybreak’s Bell! I AM GUNDAM!!!! At least, for now….
I am number one for Pro-level Reflectia now. Pics or it didn’t happen! I used the Eraser, so no stealth bonus.
Edit: Andohbtw, Ender: I AM BOSS. I was one red block away from getting the clean finish bonus too =(.
Gaaah! You’ve got me addicted to this. I’ve been playing it with IOSYS and Sound Holic Remixes all night!
NOOOOOOES!! Foiled yet again…curse you, Kabitzin! Still waiting for you to break my domination of Daybreak’s Bell though. Only then can you be a true Gundam Meister!
In my defence, I was trying out a ridiculous number of songs from my 50GB mp3 collection. Also, while I appear to have made 2x the score I did yesterday, I found myself on the bottom again…
I had a go on the demo and I am hooked now.
Higurashi’s Naraku no Hana is genuinely terrifying, it starts all mellow but my heart always skips a beat before the apex to the downhill. I suggest you give it a try.
To my former boss:
Your office chair is very comfortable!
@ Ender:
Hey! I thought you were gonna beat my score in Utada Hikaru’s Fly Me To The Moon! What gives! You know, Kabi-kun’s chair might be comfortable, but my chair is extremely warm *winks*, just for you! I won’t lie to you man, if you think being on “top” of Kabi-kun is cool, wait til you’re on top of me! *blush* I’ll bring your Ashes AND your Snow!!! XDerrr…. so yea, It would be cool if you held an audiosurf competition for the highest score on a particular song you choose. The prize doesn’t even have to be money or the like, just a mention or a cookie would do (and of course, I mean these cookies! *BA DUM PSHH*……..)
(hmm, I feel like trying Ash Like Snow now!)
I actually mentioned that to Ender this weekend. I’m wondering if anyone would enter, though, considering the last contest had so few entries even though it was pretty much just free money =/.
Also, I don’t think most people have even bothered trying Audiosurf. Perhaps if the aniblogger user base was bigger…
Well, I have tried the Audiosurf Demo and got trashed trying out the following songs,
1) JOINT, the first OP of SnS2
2) Bodies, by Drowning Pool
Unfortunately, I am not much of a racing gamer, being more of a RPG/RTS gamer; so I don’t foresee myself playing this for much longer.
Cheers.

BTW, I have more but the post might be too long. Sorry
Damn youuuuuuuu!!!!
*checks Servbot’s pwnage list* I TAKE BACK THE COMPETITION SUGGESTION!!! I CAN’T COMPETE AGAINST YOU GUYS!!! *cries a river*
Using Eraser was actually pretty fun! I’m amazed that people can get such a high score only with mono pro. I don’t want to lose another arm now!
I’m like, 10th place in Reflectia with the Eraser racer (hurr hurr). At least I made the list…..and still get a cookie…right? =3?
