Kabitzin’s January 2008 List

I need to catch up on some True Tears, and I think I might start posting about that series. I was holding the spot for Hatenkou Yuugi, but so far that show has completely underwhelmed me.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Shakugan no Shana Second: It looks like Hecate, it smells like Hecate, and it talks like Hecate, but it probably isn’t Hecate. Oh wait… Meanwhile, having a drunk in a bear suit perform all the intricate unrestricted spell surgery can’t possibly be a good idea.
  2. Bamboo Blade: What is camping without some headshots?
  3. Spice and Wolf:: I love the interaction between Horo and Lawrence, but economics is not very exciting. Perhaps if Lawrence started drawing some graphs, he could really up the ante when he outwits his adversaries.
  4. Dragonaut: I am aware that this show is extremely cheesy, but I can’t stop watching. In a battle between the chests of Machina and Garnet, who will win?! The new ED is also fantastic, especially with the hilarious images of extremely accurate anatomy.
  5. Persona: So far the mystery is surprisingly interesting, even though I realize the driving force will ultimately be bigger and badder battles. The one thing that would greatly improve this series is if the animators made the Personas easier to see.

Rising:

Falling:

  • Minami-ke Okawari: I like some of the things that the new studio has done, like the funky angles and the odd OP and jerky wiggle-walk ED, but overall I feel like too many of the laughs have been sacrificed for fanservice.
  • Hatenkou Yuugi: Usually I enjoy a journey series, but I just can’t seem to get into the characters. It just feels like a badly done Peach Pit wannabe. I think if Baroqueheat’s tattoo turned into a Papillon outfit that would probably help a lot.

but overall I feel like too many of the laughs have been sacrificed for fanservice awesome slice of life action.

    fixed. =)

I’ve been hearing a lot of things about Spice and Wolf/True tears lately, which comes to no surprise. I should make more time to watch anime rather than writing about it LOL

Isn’t “slice of life action” an oxymoron?

re: Minami Ke Okawari - did you like the Non-Named Characters of Darkness? They’re kinda creepy.

re: Hecate detection. That’s because they were too squeamish to administer the taste test!

My biggest problem (other than the character design) with Okawari is the black side characters. It reminds me of xxxholic and doesn’t exactly fit in with a comedy such as Minami-ke imo.

Shana finally rocks! Just hope it can continue keeping its current momentum and not flop again like the first 3 months…

Kabitzin: Since you have a very wack taste every once in a while aswell - try the first 2 or 3 episodes of KimiAru ;)

I found myself putting Spice and Wolf into the “to be marathoned series after it’s complete” category, and I think it’s mostly because of the economics stuff… I guess it won’t hurt to keep watch over its further developments :3

I need to catch up on Persona too… I think I have the same dilemma as totali, watching most animes for the sake of blogging lol.

I dropped following Hatenkou Yuugi after two episodes… it just, didn’t rock my shoujo soul =/ That, and because I’m more excited for other promising-looking shows this Spring season.
