Spice and Wolf 03

Our duo arrives in the port city of Pattsio, and Lawrence is eager to sell his marten pelts to some foolish foreigners at the Milone Company. On the way over, Horo spots an apple stand, and Lawrence gives her a silver coin to gorge herself on apples. The vendor at the Milone Company offers 132 silver pieces for 70 pelts, and Lawrence is willing to sell for 140 silver. However, Horo spouts some BS about the pelts being super strong and fragrantly fruity (because of the apples she bought), and tricks the merchant into buying the lot for 210 silver pieces.

When it is time to meet up with Zeiren, Lawrence decides to trust Zeiren and agrees to give Zeiren 10 silver pieces (to be returned if Zeiren is wrong) and 10% of the profit. However, when Horo and Lawrence visit money exchanger Weiss, Horo is able to tell that Lawrence was tricked and the silver content has gone down. It seems like someone is making a political power play, and Lawrence is convinced that the Milone Company is involved.

Blaaaah, the main details of the mystery really bored me this episode. I was somewhere between Horo and the vineyard wife, as I listened to Lawrence drone on about the different kinds of currency and the ways to gain clout by making your coins popular. No wonder the life expectancies were so short back then; people just kept dropping dead out of boredom!

The dumbest part of the exchange with the pelts was when Horo said it took two guys to pull the pelt off the animal’s body. A marten is like under 2 feet long; it’s not like a grizzly bear or anything. Also, martens typically eat meat, and because wheat is harvested between summer and fall, there would be plenty of meat for the martens to eat. Therefore, Horo’s story about the martens eating fruits made no sense at all. How did the Milone Company get so big with such stupid buyers? Perhaps the merchants are just a front for their money laundering schemes?
