I’ve watched a few of the winter series so far, and I haven’t been particularly impressed so far. I almost feel like this is an annual winter tradition, but on the plus side I think I will be free and clear come spring 2008. Usually I base my initial assessment on the artwork and characters, but I can be swayed by a good first episode with bad production values.
Watching
Spice and Wolf: In a weak crowd, decent animation combined with Code Geass voices and interesting characters are enough to propel this series to the top in my mind. Will this series become edutainment? I have already started posting on Spice and Wolf, and I believe it is a shortened series.
Persona: I am really reminded of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures, and that is a good thing. When I saw the chalk outline in episode 1, I immediately thought of Anti-Spirals. Hopefully this will be one game adaptation that turns out well, as Kungfucius is going to cover Persona.
Hatenkou Yuugi: I haven’t watched any episodes of this, but I liked the character designs. I’m not sure if I can deal with another journey anime, but if it dazzles me, I think this will be the second show I pick up to blog for this season.
Minami-ke Okawari: I lament the end of the adventures of Sensei and Ninomiya-kun, and the art looks to have taken a serious dive. Still, I loved the first season, so I will definitely watch the second. However, I very rarely blog pure comedy series, because it’s difficult to think of anything to say about the episodes.
Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-: Here comes another B-team sequel. If you have a proven franchise, shouldn’t you be able to get a bigger budget for your animation team? Ender might cover this, and I will probably check it out as well to get my weekly dose of robo-loli.
Maybe Watching
Mnemosyne: Sometimes “edgy” ends up being “confusing and boring” but this should put me in just the right mood for silly romances in the spring season! Besides, winter and torture go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Shigofumi: Stabbing is the newest fad. What happens if person A wants to say goodbye to person B and vice versa, but they both die at the exact same time? Also, can Fumika go postal?
True Tears: I watched the first episode and it was fairly boring. However, if I need a sappy romance show, this one seems to have the best art.
Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de : The production values were poor, but you never know if these stupid shows will end up being funny (e.g. Magikano).
H2O: Footprints in the Sand: The first episode wasn’t bad, and I was surprised at the opening beating, but I really don’t like the character designs that much.
Not Watching
Aria the Origination: I didn’t watch any of the Aria series, and slice of life is not usually my thing.
Major 4th Season: I haven’t watched any of the Major series and I don’t like baseball.
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: I didn’t watch much of the first season, and what I did see didn’t impress me that much.
Sisters of Wellber Zwei: Yet another sequel there I didn’t watch the first season. That talking tank is just such a bummer.
Rosario to Vampire: Stupid and ugly is a bad combination, unless you are also silly and funny. Gonzo involvement and a lame premise, however, doomed this series for me after the terrible first episode.
