Craft Lawrence is a traveling merchant who visits the village of Pasroe to check up on his apprentice Chloe. Chloe has had a real thing for Lawrence because chicks dig economics majors, but she gets stuck harvesting the last bundle of wheat; per village pagan traditions, this means that Chloe gets stuck for a week in the grain barn guarding the final wheat bundle. Nowadays, however, no one really believes in the wolf goddess who brings bountiful harvests, so Chloe sneaks out of the barn in an attempt to get Lawrence to roll in the hay wheat with her.
However, while Chloe is trying to seduce Lawrence, the wolf goddess Horo is able to sneak from Chloe’s bundle of wheat to the big bundle of wheat that Lawrence conveniently had in the back of his cart. Chloe really let the town down by harvesting such a small bundle (Horo can only move to a bundle larger than the final bundle harvested) and then not guarding the grain barn. Oh well, thanks to advances like irrigation, the villagers no longer need Horo. Horo is hoping that Lawrence will take her back to her birthplace of Yoitsu in the North.
I really enjoyed this first episode, as I found the characters especially interesting. I think the partnership of Horo and Lawrence will be really fun to watch on their journey north. I usually like prideful characters like Horo, but she also has that touch of emo loneliness that promises drama in the future. Of course there is the issue of how she looks more like a fox than a wolf, but I will suspend my disbelief.
Lawrence was awesome in his own way. Aside from his shrewd business sense, I loved the way he diplomatically fended off Chloe’s advances. He even played the “you are just like your father” card, and then snuck out of town with a naked loli. I hope Lawrence knows what he is getting into, however, because Horo’s rules seem rather complicated. You never know when wheat won’t be good enough, and she has to move onto eating guts.

Jeez, I feel like the only one who isn’t ready to rave about Cool and Spicy Wolf around the entire blogsphere. I dunno….it’s just the kind of show where I go “This show looks like it could be awesome…..but I’ll watch it later”. xS
The fact that it is a short series and up against a bunch of really crappy series helps, too. Do you not like wheat or economics or something?
I LOVE wheat and economics. <3
Who doesn’t?! Besides Totali, of course. Join together comrades, and watch Spice and Wolf!
This would probably be one of the few anime that I would be watching this season. Damn, Winter sucks.
The economics I’ve seen in the manga has me interested in just how far it’ll be carried out (I’m a business major and so I’ve done my fair share of economics courses).
I’ve also heard that the light novels make economics seem fun and that makes me even more interested in seeing it.
Of course, that all would come second to Horo! :P
First episode was a great adaptation of the novel. Loved the European atmosphere. Probably the best one I’ve watched this season.
6 CAPTIONS?! YAYNESS! Thank you for blessing us with your puniness! :3 and a Zelda reference to boot? *in Family Guy Herbert voice* It must be ma BIRTHDAY!!!
DID I HEAR NAKED LOLI??!! =D! *dl epi* Even without the loli, i’ve been hearing good things about this anime, and you’ve given me more reason to watch it!
*writes down in love manual*
Better not be the love manual Makoto was using…
*reads the cover* err….well…its not like Totali’s gonna stab me or anything…right? *sweats* Cause we’re cool like dat, YO! Theres no back stabbing when ur part of da family *talks with his hands*… *fantasizes* like, i guess me and Totali would be part of the Tattaglias since its got a T… but we could also be part of Gryffindor…I’ll be Dumbledore and he can be Grindelwald…MMMMM!!!! XD
Edit: wow, I just found out Dumbledores full name: Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore… sorry, I don’t keep up with the HP series.
I gave up after book one (not because I hated it, but because Im lazy XD)
You scare me.
‘He even played the “you are just like your father” card, and then snuck out of town with a naked loli.’
Don.
If Moyashimon can make bacteria adorable, I am sure it is possible for anime to make economics… captivating.
Heh.
I saw the epi, and I must say it was pretty cool (although, I was hoping for a much younger loli… I mean, I don’t even think Horo can be considered a loli… with those curves :Q I guess compared to Lawrence she is a loli. Lucky bastard)
I started ROFL-COPTER-ing when Chloe was howling! I don’t know, it was late at night, and I was half asleep! I also couldn’t stop laughing when practically all the men were chasing after her and locked her into that building. I would be creeped out if I were her!
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the ending theme! ENGRISH FTW!!! I have a soft spot for good/bad engrish songs. =3 “I danced with the peanuts for the flies!” XD
@ Totali: Don’t worry, you should know I’m only into 2D girls (and boys) :Q
@ Skane: I was about to say that, but I couldn’t really comment about it, since I haven’t watched Moyashimon…I STILL WANT THOSE PLUSHIES THOUGH!!! *looks at your power level* thats a pretty impressive comment count you got there. :Q *jealous*

Well, I wasn’t planning on watching either Spice and Wolf or True Tears, but after reading some good reviews of their first episodes, I think I will, especially after my uncertainty after watching the first episodes of H2O and GSG 2.
