Excitement is in the air at Muroe Private High School, as instructor Ishida “Kojirou” Toraji has renewed interest in the kendo club. Toraji’s senpai, Ishibashi Kenzaburo, has made him a bet that if Toraji can put together the superior girls kendo team, then he will be treated a year of free sushi at Kenzaburo’s dad’s restaurant. Unfortunately his kendo club only has two female members with captain Chiba Kirino and the perpetually absent Kuwahara Sayako.
However, one day Toraji spots the foundation of his club, Kawazoe Tamaki. Unfortunately, Tamaki feels that kendo is more of a household chore than a hobby. In the meantime, Toraji gets some fresh meat in Tamaki’s dojo-mate Nakata Yuji and Yuji’s tiny portly friend Eiga Danjuro. Danjuro (who originally wanted to join the ping pong club) in turn brings his beautiful girlfriend Miyazaki Miyako to the club. This sets up Danjuro to get bullied by the club’s strongest member, Toyama, and his toadie Iwasa. When Tamaki sees this injustice, she decides to join the club as a temporary member, to challenge Toyama.
Great first episode with some nice light humor. Toraji is pretty pathetic, but he probably won’t be a harem lead so I can accept it. When he broke that light, I was thinking it was a blessing in disguise for his electricity bill. If I was given the opportunity for a year’s supply of sushi, I would probably agree to form a girl’s kendo team, too. Considering how little work Toraji is putting into the endeavor, it definitely seems worth it. The part where Tamaki bats away all the random balls and returns the vice-principal to a third-floor window was pretty awesome. To me, Tamaki is what Konata might have been like if Konata didn’t have such a pervy father.
We got a glimpse of most of the club members this episode, with the exception of Sayako. I’m excited to watch Tamaki beat the crap out of stupid Toyama next episode, since it’s really lame for someone to beat up Danjuro. It’s a good thing that Toraji only needs 5 females, because so far more guys than girls have joined the kendo club. You’d think he’d know to go out and get some bishies or something.

I wasn’t going to cover Bamboo Blade, but all the fantasy action series fell flat for me, and the shortened season length was a big plus. Considering how slow Shana Second and Blue Drop are, I was hoping to cover at least one more series that moves briskly.
Is the Kirino connection just from the =3 mouth?
