Jyushin Enbu -Hero Tales- 04

As our heroes continue their trek to the capital, they run into some thugs in the forest who are chasing after Chinjo, a Chokindan member (aka local enforcement) of a nearby lodging town, who was protecting a little girl Rinrin. Taitou and Laila dispatch of several thugs pretty easily, and they were about to approach the others until they were stopped in their tracks by several arrow shots landing near their feet, but these arrows mysteriously disintegrate by themselves without any explosions. Ryukou catches one of these arrows, and as it disintegrates in his hands, he notices some energy residue in the arrow’s remains. Our heroes look up into the trees and see Housei wielding a crossbow. He calls off the thugs, but before he leaves, he tries to put some smooth moves on Laila before Taitou steps in to break it up. Housei points his crossbow at Taitou, but even that disintegrates in his hands. Weaponless, Housei runs off with the rest of the thugs.

Taitou, Laila, and Ryukou eventually make it to the lodging town and settle in a small restaurant, where Chinjo thanks them for saving his and Rinrin’s life. He proceeds to fill them in about how the lodging town has fallen into disarray after the leader of the Chokindan passed away and left no heir. This left Eiretsu, the right hand man of the leader, to take over, but apparently he didn’t lead with the same philosophy as the previous leader as the town has fallen upon hard times. Rinrin was the daughter of the leader, and Chinjo feels indebted to the Chokindan and takes care of Rinrin since he was previously an orphan as well. Eventually, the conversation was interrupted by Eiretsu, who barges into the restaurant demanding for some sake. Despite some tough talk, he leave them alone, but not before Housei tried to charm Laila for a second time.

Night rolls around, and Ryukou found Housei rummaging through some weapon inventory looking for a bow. Ryukou grabs his arm and channels some of his energy into Housei, and it reveals the Rokuson (another Hokushintenku hero who weilds a bow) symbol on Housei’s arm. Ryukou starts questions whether Housei knows of the fate that he’s involved in, but Housei seems to be out of loop, saying that he was only doing what his master had told him to do, which was to look for a weapon that was suitable for his abilities. Satisfied with Housei’s answer, Ryukou leaves Housei, who is later approached by Eiretsu as he seemed to be eavesdropping on the conversation between Ryukou and Housei. Housei suddenly discovers a weapon inventory scroll for an upcoming battle that mentions an uber bow known as Soutenkyu (Frost Laden Bow). Ryukou eavesdrops on their conversation, and then reports back to Taitou and Laila about the possible upcoming attack on the lodging town in 2 days. Taitou suggests that they intercept the delivery of the weapons before they arrive, so they head out later that night to do so.

On their way to intercepting the weapons, the trio runs into Housei again, and then notice that Rinrin’s mansion was burning. They all run to the mansion and find out that Eiretsu, now wielding the Soutenkyu, had given Housei and Ryukou some false info and had planned to attack that day all along. Unfortunately for him, he isn’t able to use the Soutenkyu, and Taitou manages to take down Eiretsu’s forces while Ryukou runs into the mansion to rescue Rinrin and Chinjo. Of course, they had to have Housei use the bow somehow in this episode, so Rinrin somehow gets captured later by one of Eiretsu’s goons, but Housei draws the bow and shoots and arrow to knock the goon back while Laila catches Rinrin. After this, all is well, and Housei decides to tag along with Taitou and company, although Taitou tries his best to discourage Housei from coming along.

I don’t know why, but I kept feeling like there was some continuity issues with the plot in this episode, though I couldn’t quite put my finger where the problem was (maybe something got lost in translation -_-). The primary objective of this episode was to introduce everyone to Housei, and it does a pretty good job of it and showing off his abilities.

Can’t believe after Laila helped beat up the scrubs, they went and hit that starving dog with the box! WTF, scrubs are so evil!

Also pretty awesome how Housei shut Taitou up with a bun, but Taitou countered by eating the bun rapidly.
