This isn’t really anime related, but since many blogs use the Gravatar service I thought I’d put something up about it. Basically, Automattic (a company comprised of many of the big Wordpress developers) has taken on Gravatar and has already done some tweaking to help the service scale better. They’re adding some simple features as well, but mostly concentrating on lowering the load of Gravatars on a site, and helping to optimize the service for Wordpress.
I like avatars in comments, but I was growing kinda frustrated with Gravatar because it was slow, and the features weren’t that great. I’m hopeful that these improvements will really improve the quality of Gravatars, and I’ll be waiting to see if they make it worth reenabling Gravatars. The tie in with existing Wordpress.com avatars is also intriguing, since Wordpress.com is probably the best free blogging platform available to the general public.
