Hotlink Protection Is Off

I’ve always had good relations with our host at Surpass Hosting, and I would recommend them as a hosting provider to anyone. Their prices aren’t always the cheapest, but I’ve had great customer support. Anyway, just today I went on to use the cPanel and was thrilled to see they upgraded the interface to be all AJAX optimized and better organized. I was happy, but not as happy as when I noticed that they had bumped up all our limits without increasing the price.

I don’t remember what our storage limit was before, but it’s 200 Gigs now. The cPanel just shows an infinity sign as the limit… More importantly, somehow our bandwidth limit went from 50 Gigs a month to TWO THOUSAND Gigs a month. It’s not quite Son Goku, but that’s a big increase. With that increase, I’ve decided to turn off hotlink protection and let the forum image stealers do their worst. If their guts and training overwhelm the bandwidth, I’ll renable the protection, but until then all RSS readers should now be able to download our images!

The only bad news is that I found out that our server is named “Lucky,” which is a sure sign that it will die a horrible death at some point. That or it will meet a Claymore named Clare and start travelling around and being emo.

    Heh, I wonder if they’re competing with my host, InMotion Hosting. They have a plan for 200GB space and 2TB monthly bandwidth for $5 a month ($60 a year - but you have to get it for 2 years) as well as some plans that are more and cheaper.

    However, I see that you can get unlimited subdomains, though I don’t see how many sql databases you get with your plan. I don’t get any subdomains I don’t think, but with my podcast, I wanted a place with A LOT of space (OK, 200GB is probably overkill, but I always underestimate the space I end up using).

    Luckily I don’t really have any plans for adding subdomains or having more than 2 sql databases (what I get) so those things were less important to me than the space, bandwidth, and that they appeared to have a good reputation.

    I didn’t even notice but I think my hotlinking is off as well. I had turned it off when I was on the old host because of bandwidth, but I never thought of turning on or off with my new one. I guess with my hordes of bandwidth, like you, I have little need of turning it off.

    And how many space you’ve actually used? Surpass admin will hunt you down and force you delete files if you actually take 10% of the storage.
    200G = Overselling.
