Changes to Spoiler Tags

Readers

Since version 1.6, the Simple Spoiler plugin has supported forum formatting of the spoiler tags (i.e.
and
) in addition to the HTML formatting of spoiler tags (<spoiler> and </spoiler>). I have disallowed the HTML formatting, and so Wordpress will once again eat all comment text within the HTML formatted spoiler tags. Please encode all spoiler tags with the square brackets (
and
), or use the handy quicktag buttons to insert your tags. Feel free to test out the new system in the comments, and let me know of any issues you encounter.

In preparation for WP 2.3, and future iterations of Wordpress, I’ve been trying to cut out as many modifications to the core files as possible. The last major hack in the core files right now (most current hacks are to the WP Content folder) is the kses.php change to enable the Simple Spoiler plugin.

I recommend using Find and Replace on your wp_comments table to ensure that no comments are eaten. Make sure to replace both the opening and the closing tags before reverting your kses.php to the default version. Although it won’t matter for users with administrator privileges, you may also wish to run the find and replace on the post_content of your wp_posts table as well, just for consistency’s sake. Also, the HTML entity values for the square brackets are #91 and #93, in case you want to inform your readers about the changes.

The reason for this change is that automatic update functionality has started to become a reality for Wordpress. If your core files are unhacked, you will be able to take advantage of automatic updates, and this will make it much less painful to maintain a current version of Wordpress.

That isn’t a spoiler, everyone already knows that.

Have you noticed that the preview on the upper-right shows the tags and their contents?
