Although the other classes challenge with an imouto cafe and a zombie cafe (WTF…), Setsuna is not deterred, and still wants to do a cafe as well. Because big Tanaka got injured, Mikoto has to help Setsuna, and she shepards him around making sure that Kotonoha doesn’t get a chance to talk to him. Setsuna also reveals to everyone that Makoto broke up with Kotonoha, and then goes as far as blocking Kotonoha on Makoto’s phone (after haxxoring his lame password).
Kotonoha is confused and undoes all her knitting. She can’t understand why everyone is bullying her, and why Makoto is completely ignoring her. One day, after Kotonoha gets soaked by the rain, Makoto finally goes to talk to her, but she gets Taisuke to help her get supplies instead. As Makoto and Hikari listen in, Taisuke invites Kotonoha to dance, since he heard that Makoto had broken up with her. Kotonoha storms over to Makoto’s place that night, and notices Sekai’s shoes in his doorway. Makoto tells some pathetic lies, and Sekai runs out after Kotonoha, only to get slapped in the face.
What a crazy episode! The confusion over Makoto and Kotonoha’s status leads to a game of telephone throughout the whole school. I don’t understand why Otome is so pleased, considering that the rumor states that Makoto is going out with Sekai now, but perhaps Otome didn’t hear that part of the rumor. Kotonoha is slowly piecing together the clues of how her reluctance to give into Makoto drove him into Sekai’s arms. However, without friends to defend her and spy on her enemies, Kotonoha simply does not have the entire picture, and I can’t imagine how hurt and confused she must feel right now.
Meanwhile, Makoto was awful this episode. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t love Sekai, but is simply telling her whatever it takes to get between her legs. Makoto might like Sekai as a friend, but after seeing him unblock Kotonoha because of how good she looked in a wet white shirt, I don’t think Makoto is capable of love at this stage in his life. Meanwhile, the support characters are getting more interesting as well. I can’t wait to see Otome’s plot, and I wonder what role Taisuke is going to play. He tried to play it fair by waiting till Kotonoha was available, and poor Hikari is paying for not moving faster. Also, Setsuna is creeping me out with how she was all over Makoto’s arm and how she knew his birthday by heart. And why is her house empty except for a bunch of boxes?

I think Makoto has the least questionable motives. Sure he’s an arse especially when it comes to Kotonoha. I’m not sure how old he’s supposed to be but my guess is something like 16. At that age, I’m pretty sure most guys would take their chances with Sekai too. The first love relationship will almost always be a trainwreck because that has to be learnt to a certain degree and most people would do a lot of mistakes the first time around. Even such a seemingly simple thing such as picking the right person for the right reasons needs some experience. Just look how many school girls “fall in love” with some guy 3 years older who they only know because he goes to the same school and the reason they “love” him is because he looks so “cute”. That’s really no different from some guy confusing being horny with being in love.
The only real bad thing about Makoto is that he does not tell Kotonoha that it’s over. I don’t even think he’s doing that to keep his options - which a lot of guys in real-life do.
Also as delicate as she is, I’m not surprised because he’s rather wimpy. I don’t really like how they try to make Sekai a victim. She’s just as wimpy and careless towards Kotonoha and she could just as well talk turkey with her.
Actually, in my book the real villains are the other girls because they don’t even have positive motives. They are just full of themselves, full of hate and jealousy. They are not simply avoiding akward situations, they bully Konotoha to make themselves feel better and to avoid that they become a victim themselves. This can cause far more psychological damage to a person than someone cheating on you and this isn’t kindergarden so they’re certainly aware of what they are doing to her.
I think you raise some good points about Makoto. I don’t find him sneaky at all, and in fact he seems to be a laid-back guy who will do anything to sleep with pretty girls. He’s not that difficult to understand. However, I do think he is beginning to consider stringing both girls along, since he continues to get what he wants from both Sekai and Kotonoha.
How can you hate on Otome? She is hilarious. She spends episode after episode scheming with her friends, while all this stuff is going on and she doesn’t even realize it. She has yet to do a single thing to get Makoto, yet her whole group is like convinced she’s practically won. Even Setsuna talks to Makoto more than Otome does.
Villains are not always dislikable. From some viewpoint Otome and Setsuna can certainly be considered adorable. My problem with them is simply that they single-out the weakest character. I think that’s also the main reason why Kotonoha turns a blind eye towards Makoto’s cheating. Even if there relationship is now just an illusion without this she has absolutely no friends at all and to add insult to the injury, Sekai even stabbed her in the back. Well, she doesn’t really know the details but we as the viewers can actually know that Sekai was the active part. I don’t know whether Sekai was so naive to assume that the practicing would not lead to anything else or whether she was just lying to herself.
I’m not sure whether the other girls and Otome are really friends anyway. They seem to be this kind of clique which consists only of false-friends and tag-alongs who absorb any opinion of the leader to make it their own and then stab the leader in back on the first opportunity to raise their status.
Does anyone in this series have a good friend? Seems like everyone is just waiting for their chance to screw someone else over.
