Kabitzin’s August 2007 List

I’ve been watching a ton of series lately, and many of them have been good. I think my lineup should hold up pretty well until October or so, when the new season kicks in. Things in my top 5 haven’t changed too much, although there has been a little bit of shifting.

Top Five This Month:

  1. Claymore: I don’t know how anyone can bitch about a deviation from the manga, considering what a strong job the team has done with Claymore so far. I think they at least deserve the benefit of the doubt. I’ve read the manga too, and I have found the anime superior throughout. The recent changes don’t bother me at all, and don’t affect the overall story that much; all the purists need to just chill out. This series needs more Miria braininess, but even more it needs a Fumoffu spinoff.
  2. Zombie Loan: Over the last few episodes, this show suddenly got all deep and started exploring the nuances of life without death and the importance of real friends. I really like where they are going with this show, especially with the lack of power-ups and the 6 month limit. If they would just flash the names of the mystery characters on the screen, I’d give this series 2 thumbs up.
  3. Lucky Star: Pretty much more of the same, but with increased Haruhi infomercials. As time goes on, I am sorely tempted to completely skip both Lucky Channel and the ED. I know that some people think Shiraishi and Akira are awesome, but to me they are 1-trick ponies that were barely even funny the first time I saw them. On the plus side, I like the new characters more than I thought I would, and Patricia’s accent is awesome.
  4. Seirei no Moribito: I think the next few episodes are going to be fantastic, especially with the flashback to loli-Balsa. Still, all this doom and gloom while talking about a mysterious enemy with claws is kinda boring.
  5. School Days: I told Ender that watching this show was like watching a garbage truck (on fire) plunging off an overpass. I still hold to this assessment, but I mean it in the best possible sense.

Rising:

  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS:: Although the Dragon Ballization of StrikerS continues, episode 17 was actually very entertaining. It’s rare to see a dorky evil doctor put together such a well organized plan, but this season has been marked by strong tactics instead of tons of beamu. Too bad about the brains, though. I was amused at how the enemy stores captured women naked, in tubes, and slightly chilled, like fine sake. Also, Regius is hilarious, and Hayate better shape up before he busts out a Spinning Piledriver on her.
  • Kaze no Stigma: Finally, Kazuma’s angsty past! I love how Ayano has to sit through all these flashbacks… awkward!
  • Baccano: This show makes you work hard for the enjoyment, but I think the foundation is still strong.

Falling:

  • Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan 2: Without a high budget, this series continues to sink even further.
  • Buzzer Beater: Why do I keep watching this show? I freaking hate Hideyoshi so much, too.
  • Kirche’s Screentime: Seriously, WTF? She’s had like 5 minutes so far this season, and only Tabitha is getting screwed worse. And when did Agnes become the main character in this show?! I understand she is mad that Trogdor burninated all her villagers, but she needs to just move on already.

I agree with Claymore, and I think Zombie Loan is one of those shows that probably deserves a little more attention than it gets. I’m way behind on StrikerS but I’ve heard that it’s getting pretty good……and Buzzer Beater!? People actually watch that show???

ZnT2 got hijacked by Agnes and is now a patchwork of poorly executed plot devices. The characters are not growing much and the haphazard plot is going everywhere. Hope this doesn’t quell hopes for a better season 3. XD

Good analysis, also lol @ this post. The Freddy Krueger & Zangief links, the “fine sake” comment, the School Days = flaming garbage truck, and of course Trogdor.

    Genius. :P

Also, I absolutely agree. I would watch Claymore: FUMOFFU any day of the week.

Agreed with regards to Claymore. The anime team was being praised for so long and then once the deviations and anime original ending came up the bitching came flooding in. They’re still doing an awesome job despite the changes and I look forward to see how they plan on ending everything.
