News like this reminds me of how they decided to make an equally crappy 2007 remake of the crappy 2005 anime Buzzer Beater. Now I’m not saying Basilisk was crappy, but what’s with these rapid-fire remakes?
Variety reports that Universal Pictures has licensed the rights to remake the 2005 live-action film SHINOBI about two lovers from feuding ninja clans.
I didn’t think that Shinobi was that spectacular, so maybe this will be a welcome change (depending on how cheesy the special effects are).
While the original pitted two rival ninja clans against each when members from each fall in love, Makowski is modernizing the Romeo and Juliet premise and resetting it in Hong Kong. There, the victor of a 160-year-old feud between two multinational security forces is being decided, with a love affair complicating matters. Makowski will infuse the film with elements from Asian gangster and ninja genres.
Ah yes, 1847, when it all began. Wong Fei Hung was just being born, but the ninja gangsters were already starting up their heated feud. Meanwhile, America was issuing its first postage stamps. It was an exciting time in history.
