Maestro, the all-around good guy who gives away free webspace at animeblogger.net, has finally decided that AB needs a mascot and opened up a design contest. First place wins $30, second place wins $10, and third place wins $5. Of course the real prize to any artist entering is the chance to be showcased on future AB merchandise for a chance of further recognition and revenue.
I look forward to seeing what people come up with before the August 7th deadline, and hopefully Maestro will show off all the entries. However, everyone should be aware that the contest calls for print quality submissions. In other words, you gotta be ready to provide a gigantic .PSD file that will transfer well to merchandise (PNG format, 3600 square pixels at 300 DPI). This puts the contest a little out of the reach of your typical casual artist, but is a reasonable demand considering Maestro’s plan to put the art on AB schwag.

Which pro gets even out of bed for $30? I’d think you use vector graphics for such purposes anyway.
In terms of commission, it’s a really low amount, but I think the draw is the chance for more recognition and later projects. The requirements are more of a low-grade filter than anything. If they accept chibi/SD, it actually would not be that hard to whip something up, and I don’t foresee there being a ton of entries.
