This has most likely nothing to do with MKV, the Matroska video container. Recently MKV containers often contain H.264 video. This yields better quality than XviD but needs much more CPU resources. The AVI files typically contain only XviD encoded video, often even at lower resolution so that they need even less CPU power. As a rule of thumb, if your CPU has less than 2 GHz, it might be a bit too slow to playback H.264 in real-time. For H.264 HD resolutions you definitely need a 3 GHz CPU and a good graphics card for real-time playback.

thanks guys, i allready had vlc. the problem is that i have spilled coke on my laptop and mkv-files needs too much resources and somehow my reduced laptop couldn’t handle it. i’m watchin kaze no stigma on my moms 6 year old computer now. enjoying it!

I’m pissed I only find this series in .mkv format. my computer won’t play it.
