Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 6

A hybrid recap/filler episode that segues directly back into the main storyline. The Gurren-Lagann brigade chases after a ganmen to find the beastman base, but end up lost in the fog, where they find a luxurious bath house. Can anyone say, “It’s a trap!” ? Unfortunately, Kamina and co. have not watched enough horror flicks, and proceed to indulge in the bath house’s amenities (including a horde of poorly drawn Gainax character clones). During the obligatory onsen moment, Kamina climbs over the dividing wall only to find that the womenfolk are missing, and all hell breaks loose. Well, more like a giant steam-puffing ganmen breaks loose from the guise of the building. Kamina and Simon make way to the Lagann, where they find that the beastmen minions have stolen the Gurren. Yoko busts the women out of jail, Kamina catapults into the insides of the ganmen, and Rossiu (who was suspicious all along) hops into the stolen Gurren and saves Simon in the nick of time. Assaulted from within and without, the nocturnal beastmen are throughly smacked around. Just as the heroes are enjoying their victory (and some unintentional breast-flashing by Yoko), Viral shows up to break up the party.

If only all recap episodes could be this entertaining. Granted, it seems a bit pointless to have a recap episode after only 5 episodes…but still. Also of note is that the animation and art took a dump again, though the goofy plot still made the episode worth watching.

Side Notes:

1. When crammed into the Lagann with a gaggle of busty ladies, Simon’s drill power goes into maximum RED overdrive. They should do this more often.
2. Thank goodness Rossiu kept a level head during the bath house affair. Looks like Mr. Forehead is useful after all!
3. Poor Boota deserves a raise for camping on Kamina’s schlong for the entire episode. That’s got to be uncomfortable at best.
4. Interestingly enough, the bath house ganmen was powered by an electric cord. Why was there a giant outlet sticking out of the ground in the first place though?
