Kabitzin’s April 2007 List

Oh hells yeah, this month has been so much better than most of the crap I’ve had to endure through winter. I feel refreshed, and it’s good to know that none of the series from before this season made it to my top 5 (mostly because there hasn’t been much Code Geass). I will have to check out Lucky Star at some point, simply because there has been so much good/bad buzz about it.

BTW, as there was so little Geassing this week, anyone with digital media coloring skillz wanna collaborate on a Lelouch-C.C. piece? I’ve finished the lineart, but really don’t feel like coloring it myself; however, I’d like to see what it would look like in color. I’m not as good as some of those real artists that you often find online (Ender has already confirmed that LuLu doesn’t look like his CLAMPish self), but I think this could be fun. If enough people respond, I might post the .PSD file and upload the results.

As a side note, while I was drawing the picture, I was joking with Ender that I would replace C.C. with Suzaku. If you actually do this replacement, your picture will be IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED!

Top Five This Month:

  1. El Cazador de la Bruja: This is pretty much shaping up to be my favorite of the trio so far, as I’m a big fan of all the characters. L.A. is absolutely hilarious and completely random, and the bad guys are so mockable (even the scrubs are memorable). If Bee Train doesn’t let this series devolve into flashbacks, this could easily end up being the crown jewel of the ‘girls with guns’ trilogy.
  2. Seirei no Moribito: Quite frankly, Balsa is totally amazing. If you caught episode 3, you know what I mean, as the action was so WTFPWN that it moved me like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode 12. It’s too bad Barsa is saddled with Chagum; he’s about as helpful as a blue flag.
  3. Claymore: Claymore is doing a fantastic job of blowing through some of the more boring manga portions. I like the pace they are putting up, and I’ve really enjoyed the anime a lot more than the manga. So far the atmosphere is perfect, and I’m eager for new episodes even though I already know what happens next. Show ▼
  4. Darker Than Black: An interesting premise, but the first few episodes were not as good as I expected. However, I get the feeling this will be a series that improves with time, and I was still entertained. Also, talking cats are a big plus in my book.
  5. Murder Princess: I’m making a snap judgement here, but the way they were able to blend so many silly fetishes into a solid end-product is impressive.

Rising:

  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: A lot better than I thought it would be, and Lagann has a hilariously bad design, but I don’t see myself keeping up with this series.
  • Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS: I love character redesigns! I am not a big fan of the newbies, aside from Reinforce 2, who was kinda-sorta in A’s.

Falling:

  • Shining Tears X Wind: My expectations were low, but oh hell the first episode was so incredibly bad. I haven’t watched Saint Beast, but I’m guessing this is the worst series this season.
  • Sisters of Wellber: Was going good until the talking tank appeared. Talking tank FTL.

The action scenes in episode three of Seirei no Moribito were completely off the charts. That was some of the most intensive fighting scenes I’ve ever seen in anime. I can only hope they’ll keep that level of the action through the rest of the episodes, but I kind of doubt it.

There’s a simple rule: You can have as much talking vehicles and talking swimsuits as you like but without David Hasselhoff, it’s not gonna work out!

I think opening up a coloring contest is a great idea! I dare someone to replace C.C. with Suzaku though. I *double dog* dare ya.

Just marathoned Lucky Star. Why was there so much hate? I could see how some of the food parts were not funny, but I thought it was pretty interesting. First episode was decent, with the second episode really picking it up. I dunno, maybe I am just easily amused. I thought Konata was hilarious, though I like Kagami best so far.

But really I think some people just psych themselves out with these series. If I expected Lucky Star to be uberduberawesome, I might have been disappointed, especially with the first episode having a bit of a barrier to entry.
