From the title, I thought the princess was the one being murdered, but it turns out it’s the other way around. Alita Forland is the kindhearted princess of her kingdom, but the sneaky royal scientist stages a coup d’etat with the aid of demonic creatures and his strangely cute robotic constructs. Alita’s friends and family make a stand in the throne room and are mercilessly slaughtered, buying time for the princess to escape out the emergency tunnel and head towards the neighboring kingdom. Unfortunately, her escape party draws the attention of the forest guardian beast, which proceeds to make a meal of her bodyguards. Alita blindly flees to a dead-end cliff where Valis, a skilled bounty hunter, had been hunting demonspawn near the forest with her partners Dominikov (some sort of reaper gremlin) and Pete (a Frankenstein style grunt). They both end up falling off the cliff together, but somehow end up swapping souls and bodies in the process. Dominikov and Pete manage to catch them, and after a period of confusion, the group deals with the persistent forest guardian.
Afterward, Alita begs the trio to help her retake the kingdom, but Valis initially refuses. However, Alita tells Valis that she can have the princess’s body as collateral, and will be the ruler of the kingdom if she retakes it. This is definitely an attractive deal, so it’s off to the races on a flaming motorcycle from hell. Yes, that part was totally out of left field. And so, Valis proceeds to wreak bloody havoc on the traitors and reclaims the throne for great justice…and herself.
I wasn’t expecting much from this OVA, as the merest mention of Bee Train’s involvement set off alarms in my head, but it wasn’t terrible. The first episode of Murder Princess combines light gore and random bits of comedy into an odd medley. There are so many cliches thrown together in a chaotic fashion that the show almost seems like a parody at times. Being an OVA, the production quality is quite good, although there were a few rehashed battle animations. The death scenes aren’t super hardcore, and I have yet to see Valis kill someone in cold blood, so methinks the title is rather misleading. Claymore fans in search of more sweet brutal action will not find it here. At least there’s some trashy action-adventure potential, though it remains to be seen as to whether the producers know how to capitalize on it.
