It’s a depressing episode about Hiroko’s boyfriend Shinji this time, as we get a break from Hiroko’s point of view. While Hiroko continues to lament her sex-free record, Shinji passes up a nice date so that he can stay at the construction site and place tarps over the foundation. Apparently Shinji had neglected to take proper precautions once in the past and this caused a foundation to get messed up by rain. This time he is determined to prevent the heavy rain from messing up the construction work, and stays at site all night long.
As we watch Shinji through the day, it becomes clear that he just does what he needs to without having any passion for his job. He’ll just apologize for anything that goes wrong without sticking up for himself. Shinji and Hiroko barely interact much, and he can’t even tell her how he really feels. One day he gets a call that he will be transferred into sales, and resolves to do his best. He even decides that he will tell Hiroko about it in person after work.
This episode was so depressing, as we meet yet another spineless Shinji (note the beer brand). I felt pretty bad for Shinji, but he seems to avoid making excuses by just apologizing for everything. Still, it’s good that he wants to better his situation.
The conversation at the beginning of the episode was rather telling. It seems that Masami has a different sex partner for every day of the week. Moreover, Hiroko has had some problems getting the fire started, if you know what I mean.

It was a surprising to see that Shinji was relatively spineless. I had pegged him as some high-powered exec, given the time he spent working and canceling dates with Hiro. I liked the humor in the first part of the episode (I probably would’ve reacted the same way as the waiter).
